'I can see you . . . '
Dandelion and Hawkbit watched Thorn from a distance. The black-furred rabbit was obviously exploring his new home - still exploring - he'd been doing so for several months, since he'd arrived from Efrafa as a survivor of its destruction. It was understandable; Watership Down was huge now.
'Has he seen us?' asked Dandelion. He looked uncertain, anxious. Neither he nor Hawkbit had been too keen on becoming properly acquainted with Thorn from the first, for more reasons than one, but after a game of Bobstones with him (which had evolved from being pretty awkward to quite fun, actually), they were beginning to feel differently. And now, having spotted Thorn on his warren ramblings, both wondered whether to approach the shunned-by-most, Woundwort's kin.
'Not . . . yet,' said Hawkbit, in reply to his friend's question.
'He doesn't seem so . . . scary . . . '
Hawkbit gave Dandelion a hard look. 'Has this by any chance got anything to do with that ''Black Rabbit'' thing that I heard happened when I was lost in the caverns? Jumping at shadows or something or other, hmm?'
'Eh-EM!'Dandelion looked uncomfortable as he tried to change the subject. 'I suppose Hazel's right . . . we should be more . . . empathetic towards our guests - '
'I can see you,' came a cry which startled them both. Thorn was looking over his shoulder in their direction, smiling. 'Would you like another game of Bobstones? I enjoyed the last one.'
