2011: A Year in Review

This past year has been one of the largest in animation history, wielding a total of 14 films commercially released in English-speaking countries. Of these, 9 were sequels, continuations, re-releases, or otherwise Smurfy. Three were traditionally-animated, two were entirely motion-capture, and four ended up in the Top 10 Grossing Films of the year.

Weekend

Let's take a look at the films released this past year, in release order. Beginning with Gnomeo and Juliet, which was released in America on February 11. It opened at the #3 spot its opening weekend, grossing [...]

Disney's Snow Queen is Frozen

This piece of news came about in an obscure way. The previously-announced Pixar film involving dinosaurs has had its release date replaced with, you guessed it, The Snow Queen. However, there's a new piece of information emerging: The film is now entitled Frozen.

Frozen concept art

This practice of changing movie names is not new to Disney; before Tangled was released, it was advertised and produced under the name Rapunzel. The idea behind this is to make it clear that these films are aimed more toward families and both genders, rather than kids--specifically, little girls.

This film has [...]

Snow on Animation Source

To celebrate the Christmas season, Animation Source has begun to snow! (Yes, snow!)

Snow

The "snow" season is forecast to last up through the end of December, into January, at least! If this turns out to slow your computer down too much, you can easily make it stop snowing by pressing the "Stop Snow" button at the top of any Source page. To start it again, press the same button, which will now say "Star Snow".

Snow has been a tradition on Animation Source for several years. Have fun watching it snow!

1st Animation Source Choice Awards - Video & Help

Today marks the final key date of the 1st Annual Animation Source Choice Awards before voting begins. Today I have gone over the animated films that were released in 2011, and prepared it to be released on January 1. I handed it off to Conay, host of the official ASCA website. With this, there's exactly one month before the ASCAs officially begin!

To help commemorate this event, I have prepared a video to help promote the awards show, while hopefully helping you, the members of Animation Source, gain a better understanding of what the ASCAs are all about.

Hope you enjoy the video! [...]

Quick interview from Larry Latham

Larry Latham was one of the few directors behind TaleSpin (he directed 14 episodes). And guess what, when asked about his favorite project he worked on, he says TaleSpin!

What is your name and your current occupation?

My name is Larry Latham; currently I teach Maya and Flash at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology. It’s a two year program, with a lean toward visual communications, so though we learn both software packages, the emphasis is less on character animation and more on motion graphics. The good news is that when a student really wants [...]

New Releases...and Some Surprises

Box Office Mojo today posted the latest edition of their release dates for upcoming films. Some films now have new release dates, some films have been shelved, and some films have been revealed. Care to take a guess at the surprises in store?

As this article will tell, some pretty interesting upcoming releases in animation have been revealed. The first thing that catches one's attention would be the release of four Disney classics in 3D. This is likely to follow the trend that The Lion King created when it was released earlier last month.

T-shirt Contest!

You

Hello everyone!

This is a news to help promote a new Talespin contest! Here is everything you need to know:

The contest is simple: you just have to do a digital Talespin Fan Art. Don't make an enormous background and try to adopt a "form" for your logo as a circle, for example. Be realistic: this logo is for a T-shirt contest! Don't do a complete and huge pic!

This is just for fun. Disney will probably not see it. Anyway, it could be fun to see some different ideas for these T-shirt, because the old logo is everywhere.

So, here are the [...]

Lion King 3D Tops Box Office

As this weekend at the box office proved, The Lion King  still has the magic, even after seventeen years. The film was re-released in 3D, and topped the domestic box office. Early estimates placed the film as having grossed at least $29,300,000 by the end of its beginning weekend, making The Lion King now the seventeenth highest-grossing film in the US, and the 28th highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.

This weekend marked the first time since the re-release of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi that a re-released film has grossed the most [...]

If you grew up in the '90s or somewhere near there, Pokemon was part of your life. The reason I chose to do it is because it's a comic that will probably interest a lot of the fans on Animation Source. But let's hear it from the author himself :

Winnie the Pooh - Flop or Success?

WinnieAside from a big-budget movie making big bucks this week end (aka the last part of Harry Potter, taking in the best grossing weekend ever for a film), there was a small and simple movie which doesn't play in the same league : Winnie The Pooh.

This charming film is an attempt from Disney to revitalize this franchise (after the failed attempts at making CGI Winnie, Disney didn't want to lose one of the best selling franchise when it comes to merchandise), and the image of the company at the same time, by making it a 2D movie just like the original film. It was made by high quality artists [...]

A fresh start for the staff

The recent events (conflicts between the french and english staff, especially), and a long and growing history of visitors complaining about moderators "making their own rules" and "greedy for power", have convinced me that it was time to make serious changes to the Animation Source staff.

The staff has expanded so much over the years, new mods have been hired by site admins in charge, which ultimately makes me unable to know who in the current staff was doing their job correctly or not. It's no secret that some mods have applied rules in strange ways, banning people for little things [...]

Summer Preview: Cars 2 and Winnie the Pooh

Being a Journalist has its ups and downs. One of my ups this past week was one that caught me completely off-guard: I was given the opportunity to see advanced showings of Cars 2 and Winnie the Pooh.

And

You wonder how I managed to see these films early? I will say no more except that I have connections. At any rate, here are my reviews (spoiler-free) of both films.

Starting out with Cars 2. The film comes out in America this Friday, being released as Pixar's 11th animated film, and its first non-Toy Story sequel. The movie follows Lightning McQueen and Mater in a race around the [...]

Legend of the Chaos God comic

I have put a comic on the site that many fans were looking for : The Legend of the Chaos God!
Why is this one important? Because that's the only crossover between the Disney Afternoon shows that has ever been made!

So the comic is in 5 parts : the first one is TaleSpin, the second Chip'n Dale Rescue Rangers, the third Goof Troop, the fourth Ducktales, and the last one Darkwing Duck.

Legend of the Chaos God comic

You'll find the comic to download here!

My comments on the comic :

- Why do all the TaleSpin comics seem to have "non-TaleSpin" models for secondary characters? These "human-dogs" characters fit [...]

Animation Source - Under attack!

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the alarming and dramatic title, but I think all of the persons here has the right to know what's going on. Animation Source got entirely hacked, yesterday night.

The troll hacked a lot of moderator/administrator accounts to spam and to give permissions to his double-accounts and thus, made himself an easy way to take control and destroy the sites. I decided to demod every single staff member on the AS sites to avoid their powers to be misused. .

Then the hacker striked back and started to delete a bunch of accounts - including some staff [...]

Chill!

Animation Source was hacked last night and GreyWolf has deactivated the Sources to keep them safe.

She was meant to be making a News to let everyone know but I don't know where she went so I'm making one in hopes it'll calm things down.

Just sit tight and chat on AS itself and the forums until Steet & Grey can restore everything.  c:

TaleSpin fan project reorganized!

Considering I received several comments from people not understanding what was the aim of the "Virtual Season" project, I have decided to rename it officially to "TaleSpin fan comics" project. I think this will avoid much confusion.

Project

Originally we didn't decide on the form of the project, and that's why we used the term "Virtual Season". I hope everyone is OK with the name change! (I will change the banner soon with the new name)

Also, I felt the organization of the topics on the forums was messy. There were two sections for almost the same thing, originally the second section [...]

New answers from TaleSpin's creator!

Jymn Magon came to the site today and answered a few more fans questions!

Read the answers in the "Ask the creators" section

He especially answered an interesting question relating to the auditions process :

In the normal casting process, a professional casting company brings numerous people into a studio to read sample dialogue lines (or "sides") to see if they have the right voice for the part. Then they give the producers cassette tapes of the various takes. (I still have my tapes!) Usually we find who we want on the first go-round, but sometimes more people are called in [...]

With the recent success of the Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers and Ducktales comics, TaleSpin deserved to have a monthly comics series as well - but it unfortunately won't happen at Boom Studios (the current publisher who had the rights), as they officially declined to be able to get the licence from Disney, even though they were interested.

But now, the rights are moving back to Disney/Marvel, and this becomes a possibility again!

Boom! Studios loses the Disney licence (?)

There isn't an official announcement, but all clues lead to the same conclusion...
Disney/Marvel is getting back the Disney properties for comic books.

Let me summarize everything I know.
Bye Boom!

By early 2009, Boom! announced that they got the Pixar and Muppets licences.

Then by mid-2009, they got the "Disney classics" licence.

One month later, Disney bought the Marvel company for billions of dollars...

Boom Studios was able to release Pixar and Muppets titles, until October 2010, when they stopped abruptly to release them. For a few months, Boom refused to comment on this [...]

WORST TaleSpin news EVER :(

EDIT on August 2012 : Looking back at this, I obviously overreacted, due to the disappointment. It appears we'll probably never know the "real" reason behind the cancellation and various problems of the Disney / Boom Studios comics.

Newsflash : TaleSpin is NOT A DISNEY AFTERNOON PROPERTY!!!

No love for TaleSpin. Thank you Disney

The Old Man and the Sea Duck graphical novel

Tale Spin Graphical novel

Did you know that a graphical novel version of the fan-favorite episode "The Old Man and the Sea Duck" was released in 1991?

Well I sure knew about the comic version, but not that one! So I bought it, and you can read that 48 pages book right here.

My little review : this is a simplified version of the episode. Some of the events are changed (especially the beginning, with Wildcat already in the plane when Baloo has to go through the "Mirkle Pass", and he eventually gets hit by a...coconut.)

The art on the characters is good, but the scenery [...]

Lately, there have been many issues surrounding the moderation of fan creations, and in particular the fan characters : too many characters to validate, long waits for validations,... But the biggest source of problems, is that each person has different opinions on what SHOULD or SHOULDN'T be accepted in this section. And this leads to conflicts between the members and the mods, and none would really know what rules to follow.

TaleSpin DVDs released in Czech Republic

After Greece recently, it seems another country is getting a release Letohratkyof TaleSpin DVDs : Czech Republic. This follows the same pattern : 4 episodes on each DVD.

Also, another batch of TaleSpin DVDs has been released in Greece, which seem to follow the content of the american ones (volume 1 then volume 2) even if they are cut into a lot more discs.

So I guess this means it did good sales. If it stays successful, maybe we could finally have a way to get the remaining 11 episodes in good DVD quality? (rather than ugly Youtube quality!)

Rare TaleSpin french book

Well I'm taking this all back! 'Cause here are the first information :

TaleSpin vinylmation

"These Vinylmation™ Figures will be limited edition and sold in open windowed boxes of two, similarly to the Wall-E/EVE release in 2010. The first set will feature Baloo and Kit Cloudkicker from Disney's Talespin"
