Animation Source news
A fresh start for the staff

Written by steet :

The recent events (conflicts between the french and english staff, especially), and a long and growing history of visitors complaining about moderators "making their own rules" and "greedy for power", have convinced me that it was time to make serious changes to the Animation Source staff.

The staff has expanded so much over the years, new mods have been hired by site admins in charge, which ultimately makes me unable to know who in the current staff was doing their job correctly or not. It's no secret that some mods have applied rules in strange ways, banning people for little things and ignoring other more important matters. Some have forgotten long ago that moderating means helping the members, not threaten them of breaking rules constantly. Sure, managing AS isn't easy, and some mods were doing great efforts, but currently, in one word : it's a mess.

So I have removed everyone on staff on the english side. I have decided to constitute a whole new, small team of moderators in charge of the AS sites which will be easier to administrate. I will check the behaviors of each of the members I'll consider, I will give my instructions on how to manage everything, in order for the site to go in the right direction, and I will make sure that they do their job correctly after that. In the end, it should benefit the regular members.

Of course, this will probably take a few days, so until then, I have kept some mods on the site to do the minimal duties.

Like El Chivato, the day or so before the removal, I speant alot of time moderating TLKS, to help clean up the sections because the mods before us didn't do their jobs right.

I also speant hours webranking AnS, hours out of my time which now seems useless.

I second what Yukon and Inferno said. Only some moderators were ever like that, the others were good and did their job just fine. I'm not quite as happy about this as other members are. It's not really fair to have a group punishment if only /some/ people were power-hungry and made up rules. It's just not.

Example: if a student or more was/were misbehaving in class, a teacher might make him/them stay at school longer until the parents come. Reasonable. Now, I know a teacher who, if only a few students are being bad, she'll make the /whole/ class stay behind until their parents come or she's decided it's been long enough. Now, does that sound fair? Nope. It actually sounds like this situation, almost. Some people being bad but punishing the whole group.

Another example that happens to involve school: if some kids were being naughty, a teacher would probably take student points from them. The same teacher who I told you of in the last one would take points from the whole class just because of them. Fair? Not really.

Anyone get what I'm saying? It's just not really fair, even if the idea of getting new mods /is/ good. Demodding the bad ones and keeping the good ones would have been ideal, really.

Sorry for the long and possibly boring post, by the way, just trying to make a good point.

~Apparently-former character and shoutbox mod of TLKS/contests and questions mod of AcS. (No rudeness intended in that, by the way, I wanted to say that and apparently it turns out looking rude xD Oh well.)

Tromacon-- you are right... but truth be told, you know, we have so many new rules( some good, some not) and many of these rules seem to be viewed as too controlling (i asked around some of our much loved previous members that deleted their accounts) the sites aren't really as fun anymore. but yes i think that some should have been de-moted, some kept (like the ones who do their job right for instance, ElChivat)

I agree with what Deni said. I hope that you find the right people to be moderators, though I think something should have been done about this a long time ago. :p

Hmm...I can't comment on this much because I don't know anything about the troubles issued here. But I'm not sure if it's fair to punish every mod for fights and misuse of powers only some of the staff did. (And by punish I mean by taking their jobs away even if they worked well and hard.)

But as said, I don't know the entire situation. So all I can really speak for is myself. I was just promoted into an Articles Mod at The Lion King Source, the day before all mods disappeared from existence. I used all night to do what I was wished to do; to clean up the Articles section, and I also tried to help the contributors to improve their articles so they could get reactivated. And I would LOVE to continue as an Articles Mod there because I'd love to go on helping this site's quality and its users. I don't think I've done anything to not deserve my job back.

This is a wonderful idea. Starting fresh and creating an under-control team to moderate the sources is the best thing to do for now.

I think it would be cool to be a mod. But that's just me. I'll say that wherever there's more than one person, something bad is gonna happen and feathers will get ruffled.

Tromacon-I personally don't think that the sites that aren't 'being used' should be deleted. There is some users who like those sites, and there could be members who join in the future who further help make create those dead sites to be active.

I think it's a good thing that Steet is starting afresh with the mods. The ones who actually need/deserve to be mods will probably get their jobs back eventually, and having it taken away from every mod might remind people that there are rules to follow and there are consequences if you don't.

Lots of people are saying the site is dead, but I don't really think that's true. If you have a plant that looks dead, you prune it right back, getting rid of all the dead and rotten parts, and before you know there will be new shoots. To be honest I think that is exactly what the site needs. All the new sources that aren't being used should be deleted and a new, smaller team of mods should be appointed. If we just cut it back down to how it used to be, I bet you the site will be a lot better for it.

I have to agree with every member and mainly the mods, though, cause they do deserve their jobs back. Im not trying to sound like a rebel, and I dont mean Rebelness, but I do have my opinions and everybody has their opinions.

I personally think this was a bad idea, but I guess I can see how it's good. But I agree with Yukon, if you had looked at your pms, you'd see who was really behind this... I just hope you look at the pms and see that some of us mods were doing our job and trying to stop the madness. :|

I just hope everything gets better, and situated and this drama stops. Dx

MJ -> I am pretty sure if Steet wanted specific members to be mods, then he would not have given that power to the administrators.

Personally, whatever happens on this site is fine with me. As long as I get to do what I love on here, nothing else matters. It's a fan site, and it should always remain that way, no matter what. :)

Steet: Americanwolf here. There was a troll last night on the site that was copying my name, similar to it but it wasn't exactly my name. I tried to login this morning and I was apparently banned. Think you can fix that for me? xD

This site will dry up and die without drama. Just look at how dead the shoutbox is until there's a flame war going on.

Every site besides BS is dead. The only time people go on there is when there's drama. The subject matter of this site bores people, and there's never any new news to talk about with 90's animated movies. Because of this, people resort to BAWWWWWWWWWWing and starting drama for the lulz. Getting rid of the trolling (which will never happen) would make this site die faster than Bambi's mom. LULZ

I think this is EXACTLY what Animation Source needed. Does it mean less trolls being able to be stopped? Of course, but I daresay, every single mod (even me) at some point or another abused their powers, and because of that, this just HAD to be done.

Can't wait to see what the future has in store for the Animation Source staff. If possible, I hope to be a part of it.

It may seem like a good idea to some, especially regular members. As for the mods who actually did their jobs, this is just terrible. Bringing group punishments to the site is unfair, because it was only a handful of mods, which we have PROVEN, that were to blame. Oh well, everything could've functioned just fine, if you had have taken 5 minutes to check your PMs, but it comes to this.

Cheers.

Also, for being a moderator since early 2006, I have noticed the crazy changes between the staff's attitude. It is very sad that the entire moderation was lead into this. And I must say, we didn't really have such problems before. However, once again, hopefully you'll make the right decison.

Futile idea. Hope you manage to sort out this problem and make a good decision in who you choose to be a moderator. Kudos.

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
VERY well said, Jordan. Sadly, for these particular people, most of whom are involved in the latest trolling against the site either directly or circumstantially, it IS all about the power, the attention, and the control. As steet said earlier (in the TSS shoutbox on Sunday), somewhere along the way, several moderators (and admins) forgot that it is about helping the membership and fixing problems, not lording over members and creating rules as they go along to suit themselves. Truer words were never spoken.

Like Alpine said it would have been better if the admins should have consulted you before putting any moderator in charge. So you could a) know who is in the staff and b) approove the suggested people or deny. Maybe if it would have been like that we would never have come into the mess we are in now.
But okay, nobody can make it unhappen, and it is a good decision to create an all new staff, people you think are able to be REAL moderators, not just power-hungry boss arounds. I┤ve seen moderators switching rules like they wish, and I have to say it is really time for a change. Hopefully it┤s not too late.
And people may leaving because of the change or because they don┤t become part of the staff again is just ridiculus. I mean, didn┤t we all join for other reasons than power? At least we should.
Personally I wouldn┤t leave if I don┤t get added back to the staff (Okay I wasn┤t admin/moderator for long so it doesn┤t matter anyways). I mean, I wouldn┤t get butthurt over it. I joined this site because I like animated movies, to show my (crappy looking XD) art and to meet friends, to have fun. And I think you don┤t need power to have fun. You don┤t need to be able to boss around other people.
So yeah, to make it short, I wish you luck to find the right people, hopefully this mess will straightened out soon.

Interesting. I know that some sort of change needs to happen on this site, but I didn't quite see this coming.
