Animation Source news
A fresh start for the staff

Written by steet :

The recent events (conflicts between the french and english staff, especially), and a long and growing history of visitors complaining about moderators "making their own rules" and "greedy for power", have convinced me that it was time to make serious changes to the Animation Source staff.

The staff has expanded so much over the years, new mods have been hired by site admins in charge, which ultimately makes me unable to know who in the current staff was doing their job correctly or not. It's no secret that some mods have applied rules in strange ways, banning people for little things and ignoring other more important matters. Some have forgotten long ago that moderating means helping the members, not threaten them of breaking rules constantly. Sure, managing AS isn't easy, and some mods were doing great efforts, but currently, in one word : it's a mess.

So I have removed everyone on staff on the english side. I have decided to constitute a whole new, small team of moderators in charge of the AS sites which will be easier to administrate. I will check the behaviors of each of the members I'll consider, I will give my instructions on how to manage everything, in order for the site to go in the right direction, and I will make sure that they do their job correctly after that. In the end, it should benefit the regular members.

Of course, this will probably take a few days, so until then, I have kept some mods on the site to do the minimal duties.

I third was Yukon, Inferno, and TheLionKingLover have already stated. I realize it's not our decision to make, but I do feel its unfair for those who did their moderating jobs following the rules and doing only what you indicated to do.

And while I do also realize that you (steet) do not know exactly who was trustworthy or not, perhaps the ones who chose the mods could have known?

I don't know, maybe it's just me... I spent a very VERY long time working on Oliver&Company Source information and screenshots and now... Well. And Fox&theHound Source, I've spent an incredible amount of effort and time to do the graphics and finishing the information, and the other members who worked on the information and screenshots like Banshee and Rio, have worked extremely hard as well.

I just don't believe it's fair to de-mod them when the site hasn't even been approved yet. And what Inferno, Yukon, and TheLionKingLover said before me, it's just... I don't know. A group punishment doesn't seem fair. Those who did step out of line were told repeatedly not to do so. Everyone says they shouldn't be 'embarrassed like that' but they brought it upon themselves by not listening and not following the rules.

Sorry people, this is going to take a little longer. Probably one more week because I won't be at home for the largest part of next week. I prefer to take time and not rush things, and it seems the site is doing OK these days.

Chivato - no worries. I meant no criticism. Just explaining what I think is his intent, based upon what inferences you made. We're good! At least, from where I'm standing.

@ JerseyCaptrain:

"But if steet (and Grey Wolf) don't get down to business and start laying out the new staff (and bringing back those staffers who were not part of that egocentric little group), then this place will really start to unwind and suffer as a result."

I never said that this staff problem should not be dealt with pretty much immediately. I was just saying that the way Steet intents to do it judging by the above announcement, it doesn't seem like the fairest choice, just the easiest for him. That is if he's to pick and choose only a small group for a new staff instead of giving the jobs back to all those of us who deserve it. So I really hope they indeed are bringing back us who were not part of the troublemaking and did our jobs well.

I don't know. Maybe we just misinterpret that announcement?

Chivato: steet's a good enough person. Not perfect, but who is? He has had his faults in handling this website before, but he does care about it. Many people would argue that. They have grown frustrated and weary with what appears to them to be that all he cares about is TaleSpin Source (that is not true I think). But he has been noticeably absent from being proactively in control of what IS, after all, his site. Not OUR site. He unwittingly gave control over to people whose priority has been far more about "obey me, I am a mod/admin, or else I will ban you forever and a day!" "Don't you dare speak against me or my friends, or you will pay the price!" People might (and probably will) say that this is a silly accusation, but many people (many of whom posted in this topic as well) could easily account their own experiences with that heavy-handed nonsense. And of mysterious rules popping up out of nowhere every time one of those staffers didn't like something a member did, or wanted to run roughshod over one or more members they don't happen to like personally. It's ridiculous, and it appears as though those days MAY be over. But if steet (and Grey Wolf) don't get down to business and start laying out the new staff (and bringing back those staffers who were not part of that egocentric little group), then this place will really start to unwind and suffer as a result. And at that point, steet will only have himself to blame...overworked as he says he is (and I don't mean to belittle that...he probably is. But it's his site, and his problem to confront. He made a good initial showing of it a few days ago. It's time to move...before it's too late).

Oh, yeah, just to make clear; I don't mean to judge Steet as an adminisator/webmaster. I don't even know him that well as I've had zero contact with him. He might be a great admin and a person, so I'm just pointing out that I think he's making a a mistake if he does this with the staff and how he wouldn't need to. (As in also I below suggested perhaps a better way to reach the goal he's trying to.)

Harry Potter FTW
I agree with El Chivato on this one. Steet's awesome, of course, but this just seems off to me.

"Steet is trying to take his site back, and the best way to do that without having former moderators hating him is to restart the entire staff."

But...That doesn't make sense. Restarting the entire staff means that he fired a lot of those who did a fine job and worked hard. That is not a way to avoid being hated by the former employees. In fact, that the best way to make them hate him. 'Cause I don't think anyone appreciates being kicked out for something someone else did while themselves having tried their best to do well and work hard.

And might I add, if he took the jobs away from only those who misused their powers and kept those of us who did well, and then had all future mods validated through him, we'd reach the same better future. I really really don't see the need for this kind of extreme elimination and refreshing. To me this doesn't seem the best way, just the easiest way by not having to look into and consider who deserves it and who not. And that's, again, very unfair.

I might add that the group punishment method used in some schools or the army, I think is usually used in efforts to make everyone hate the misbehaving individuals, in hopes that it would help. But in the internet it won't work because the misbehaving can just disappear and move on, whereas in the army and school they'll have to face the community every day.

Meh.
TheLionKingLover -> I think Steet does not want to punish specific moderators, because that would embarrass them over the entire Source. Would you want that type of guilt on you for making some former moderators look like the bad one? Steet is trying to take his site back, and the best way to do that without having former moderators hating him is to restart the entire staff.
