A full 15 years after the release of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, DreamWorks Animation has decided to do the unthinkable. Revive it as a Netflix series called Spirit Riding Free. A trailer of the series has been released, but be warned: This isn't Spirit as we know it...
From what we see here, this series takes on a completely different turn from the Oscar-nominated movie. It is presented in cheap CGI instead than the beautiful 2D "tradigital" animation, there is no Matt Damon narration, and Spirit himself isn't even the focus of the show. Instead, we look into [...]

Hello readers! There’s not much animation news to report on this week’s Weekly News, but I do have a few news stories to provide. This being how Smurfs: The Lost Village is performing in theatres, the first teaser trailer of My Little Pony: The Movie, and the surprise comeback of Invader Zim.
Smurfs: The Lost Village is disappointingly blue
With Smurfs: The Lost Village, Sony Pictures Animation has been hoping this reboot will redeem the franchise after their two terrible live-action views. Unfortunately, it’s not looking too smurfy when it comes to the [...]
[20th Century Fox]
Greetings fellows! In this week’s Weekly News, we’ll look at how critics are reacting to DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby, the first trailer of Blue Sky’s Ferdinand, a delay in the US release of Leap!, and what Paramount and STX had in store for animation at CinemaCon!
The Boss Baby is a mixed doody
Alec Baldwin is a baby! That seems to be the big selling point of DreamWorks’ new comedy The Boss Baby, which is based on the picture book of the same name by Marla Frazee. Now that the movie has been released, the reactions are pretty [...]
Disney is well underway in making a live-action/CGI remake of The Lion King, and it has just been announced by the Mouse House that there will be an interesting twist. It turns out this incarnation will be crossing over with the Star Wars universe!
The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm made the surprise announcement that it’ll be combining two of their biggest franchises into one epic feature. Sources report that the massive box office success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and the recent Disney live-action remakes convinced Disney that [...]
Tra-la-laaaaaa! I hear-by welcome you all to this weeks Weekly News, the section where I talk about the latest animation news! This week we’ll look into two new DreamWorks trailers, those being The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, plus we look at the soundtrack of DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp getting a CD release!
The Boss Baby Trailer #2 - A Tale NOT As Old As Time
DreamWorks Animation’s newest comedy The Boss Baby is only days away from release. The studio has released a new trailer in front of [...]
Greetings readers. My oh my, this is gonna be a big Weekly News, because with the release of a rather pointless live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, we have been flooded with so many of animated movie trailers up to the point that it’s ridiculous! This includes Smurfs: The Lost Village, Ballerina/Leap!, Despicable Me 3, Coco, and Early Man. After that, I’ll talk about some unfortunate news regarding SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg.
Smurfs: The Lost Village - Official “Lost” Trailer
First up is the new trailer of Sony [...]
Hello guys, and welcome to another Weekly News. There was little to report on this week, but I will be talking about the unfortunate cancelation of DreamWorks’ Larrikins, and new details on Tangled: The Series.
DreamWorks kills off Larrikins
We are sad to report that another future project from DreamWorks Animation, Larrikins, has officially been put on the chopping block. This is the second DreamWorks project to be canceled following the Comcast/NBCUniversal buyout, the first being The Croods 2.
[Peter de Sève]
Larrikins, originally scheduled for [...]
Hello, Animation Source! Once again I apologise for the late Weekly News, because studies and illness have gotten in the way. But finally, I have plenty of news for report on! HEELLLOOO BOLT FANS!

Here is a list of all the updates I have provided to Bolt Source:
Greetings users of Animation Source! Sorry if this entry of Weekly News is a bit late, and theres very few news to report on yet again, but I have managed to gather a few. For this one, I look into Zootopia winning the Academy Award, and how Rock Dog is performing in the US.
Zootopia wins the Academy Award
What a surprise. As everyone predicted, Zootopia has been awarded the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!
With this win, it means that The Walt Disney Company has won the Best Animated [...]
Welcome to the Weekly News… well, kinda. To be honest, there was very little animation news to report on this week, down to the point where theres only one noteworthy story. That one would be Kubo and the Two String’s win at the BAFTA Awards.
Kubo and the Two Strings wins the BAFTA Award
While we all patiently wait for the Academy Awards, it’s Britain’s turn to deliver film awards. On February 12, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA for short) presented the 70th British Academy Film Awards in Royal Albert Hall of London. [...]
HAPPY VALENTINES EVERYONE!
It’s that day of the year where a bit of love and kindness is shared around the world. On Animation Source, especially on the French side, Valentines Day is commonly celebrated with fan pairings being created in drawings and images. For the first time, the English side joined in with the French side for the first time in a Valentines project like this, and we have a lot of impressive entries to get through.
Hello fellow users of Animation Source! It is my pleasure to announce that we have opened the newest addition to our AS sites.
I present to you Over the Hedge Source, dedicated to the 2006 comedy by DreamWorks Animation! It is our third site based upon a DreamWorks franchise, following Spirit Source and How to Train Your Dragon Source.
This has been a pet project that I had been working on for some time. As you probably know, Over the Hedge is one of my favourite animated movies. Being a big fan myself, I wanted to do justice to the film by giving it it’s own special place [...]
[Warner Bros. Pictures]
Welcome to another batch of Weekly News! For this one, we’ll look into how critics are reacting to The Lego Batman Movie, the first trailer of The Lego Ninjago Movie, a bunch of TV show trailers (Tangled: Before Ever After, Dragons: Race to the Edge, and the Samurai Jack revival) and finally some new characters for My Little Pony: The Movie.
Everything is still awesome in The Lego Batman Movie
Holy bricks, Batman! Critics are loving this movie!
[Warner Bros. Pictures]
As you probably have known, 2016 was a rather lacklustre year for DC movies, [...]
Ten years ago, while riding a train, I had an idea : why not making a WAP version of Balto Source? It would be very nice to see the latest fanarts whenever, wherever!
Even though this never happened, I'm glad to announce Animation Source is now mobile friendly!
It's exactly the same site, with all the same functionalities (thanks to responsive design), just with things resized and moved so it's more practical.
Of course it's not perfect yet, I'm still fixing things but it's already much easier to browse the site on a phone or tablet!
On a side note, I've also made quite a lot [...]
This week in the Weekly News, I have plenty of news to discuss about here.. I’ll talk about the Balto trilogy arriving on Netflix, the winners of the 44th Annie Awards, a new animated talking animal movie titled Arctic Justice: Thunder Squad, and The Lego Movie Sequel getting a new director.
Balto arrives on Netflix
(and we got mentioned on a big news site?)
It’s time to Reach for the Light once again, because the Balto trilogy is now available to watch on the streaming service Netflix!
Starting from February 1, US [...]
New video with more information on the "Spirit: Riding Free" series.
Apparently, the buckskin character featured is not in fact Spirit himself, but a mustang of the same name (this was done for copyright reasons).
There are many more models, characters from the series. Interestingly, (alongside the fact that the three main horse characters are a buckskin, paint and palomino - like Spirit, Rain and Esperanza) some of these other characters seem to resemble (in basic design) characters from the book series [...]
It’s time for the latest animation news! In this week’s Weekly News, we'll look into the animation nominees of the 89th Academy Awards, Illumination Entertainment and their big plans for sequels, and the new premiere date of the long-awaited Samurai Jack revival.
Animation at the 89th Academy Awards
Now that the Golden Globes are out of the way, it’s now the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ turn to honour the best of cinema with the 89th Academy Awards. As predicted, La La Land is a favourite among the Academy with 14 [...]
UPDATE : There you go, all the Animation Source sites now implement HTTPS so they're more secure!
Also, they now support HTTP/2 which makes page loading faster. It's very noticeable on the film galleries pages, for example!
The site won't be available for a short amount of time tomorrow morning (or late this night, for American folks), as I need to perform some updates.
This includes security updates, HTTPS support and HTTP/2.
I'll update this news once it's done![...]
