Breeds?!?!

Breeds?!?!

WWhat breeds are Spirit and the gang? Read here to find out!!

Ever wondered what breeds of horses are in the movie? There seems to be a bit of confusion about what breeds the spirit horses are, so let me  make it easier for you!

Spirit:

His breed is a no-brainer. Spirit is 100% Mustang. There are a few types of mustangs but in the movie, Spirit is suppossed to be an American mustang. The real Spirit that inspired the movie is actually a Kiger Mustang though.

Esperanza:

Since her son is 100% mustang, what do you think she is? If you think she is a mustang as we, you are correct. Esperanza is a mustang too.

Rain

Rain's breed may be a little harder to figure out since she has a pinto coat (pinto is a coat color and Paint horses are a breed) and most Paints have pinto coloring (not all paints are pintos). She couldn't have been a paint because the breed was refined and made official until later on in the 20th century when COMMANCHE Indians began to breed them (not Lakota like Little Creek) Rain is, indeed, a mustang as well, HOWEVER, she does have another breed mixed into her as well.

In the book about her parents(Sierra by Katheen Duey) her father is a Mustang but her mother is haf and half: Rain's Grandmother is an escaped tame horse. Her breed is not mentioned, so it could be almost anything.

The Native American Horses:

No one quite knows what breed these horses are. Most are probably mustangs, but some Native Americans could have stolen or captured escaped horses from the army or any other pioneers... so they coud be really amost any breed that was around at that time.

Army Horses:

Like the Native American Horses, the horses in the calvary could be a few different breeds: Morgans were an especially common Army Horse breed but Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreeds and sometimes Mustangs were also used. In real life, the US army didn't care that much about mustangs. Mustangs often took to long to train and the army could breed their own horses that were already tame and easier to train.

I hope this heped for anyone who was confused about the breeds of certain characters! Iknow the movie may not stick to real-life facts but if everything is historically based (which it does appear to be) the breeds listed above should be pretty accurate.

And Appaloosas do not have paint markings. They have spots, mottled skin, striped hooves and have white sclera around the eyes. (Though all horses in the movie have white around the eyes.) Unless of course they are a pintaloosa. But of course, we can see she(Rain) has no signs of being an Appaloosa. Plus neither do either of her parents. Sierra or Storm. Grand parents as well, Bonita and Rafael. They do not seem to be Appaloosas either. She is not an Appaloosa.

Wikipedia does have moderators. Once my sister typed random words on an article there and got a warning. Then the information was immediately changed back. But yes, information could be changed by someone who thinks they are correcting it, but are making it incorrect. According to the APHA, Rain is a paint horse. http://dreamworks.wikia.com/wiki/Rain
But then again Sierra is whatever Bonita is(Spanish Horse) and whatever Rafael is. And Storm? What is he? Then, again this is -before!- Any of these breeds officially existed. Mustang was a general (censored) for free roaming horses. The part of history this takes place is about the 19th century(Correct me if I'm wrong) This is when and where these breeds start to sprout. But yes, Spirit and Esperanza are obviously mustangs. The cavalry horses since they look so alike, are probably some 'government horses' Given by the government to the cavalry . They could thoroughbreds.

Wikipedia isn't a website anyone should trust. The information in that website could get changed by anyone in anytime. The Colonel and the Indians were back in the 1800's. Kiger Mustangs weren't even discovered till late 1970's. Kiger Mustang wouldn't make since.

I would of thought Rain was a draft horse- because of her nose! Rain's nose is what people call a roman nose. A roman nose is usually found on a shire or a clydesdale, but I didn't think she could be one of those breeds, because of her build. Maybe I'm wrong- maybe you can find it on a light saddle horse,I think she is either an American paint or Indian horse.

no, youre right gemma. paint horses have spots that look as if they're "splashed" onto the horse. appaloosas have spots that look more like dots sort of like a dalmation for anyone who doesn't really know horses.
and thanks:)

In my opinion, Rain seems like a sort of half breed to me. Perhaps Pinto and Appaloosa, as LionKingLover states? =)

If you want to search for Rain's "other half"
remember to take consideration on her Roman Nose profile.
Even thought for mustangs it varies, not many horse breeds and/or types have
Roman Nose, so that will cut your search field to about half {=

you have to read Kathleen Duey's books to find out. Esperanza wasn't from a breeding farm and the Palomino breed doesn't run wild (unless they escape and Esperanza didn't, she was born there). Her color is palomino though. Same goes for Rain. You have to read the books "Sierra" and "Bonita" (about Rain's parents and grandparents). Her grandmother is an unknown breed but her father is a pure mustang. Her coat color is pinto though (which most Paints have but mustangs do too).
