Ol' Drummer Pic

Ol' Drummer Pic

This is just a picture of Drummer which I used to get his markings before I drew his character ref. :) As you can see, his white leg markings stem from his grandfather Jafiya (Pawface's awesome design 'husky marking' idea, pretty unique to the site - not sure about elsewhere), white his dark markings come from his grandmother Jet. At Pawface's suggestion I gave him a kind of matted (dreadlocks?) mane to make him stand out among other character, I hoped. Now, this leads me to a question . . .

(Mods, please let me know if you think this may cause some drama . . . )

. . . My question is this: what do you think about it if your designs (or just characters) are possibly being copied / taken ideas from? Do you find it complimentary or not? Oh, and what do you think about giving credit for ideas that get used? Should credit ideally be given if you know who/what inspired you?

Happystool: No real issues at present - I was just curious to know everyone's thoughts. Thanks though :)

Thanks, all. Very interesting to see these views. :RaisedEyebrow:

For my part, although being 'inspiring' is cool, it can get a bit tiring if ideas seem to get taken for reasons along the lines of, 'It's popular, so I'll copy and hopefully get as much attention!' (and this has happened). Basically your hard-worked-on ideas get taken not out of respect, but to gain respect. And usually without credit being given.

Otherwise yes, being inspiring is okay, especially if it inspires people to be more creative . . . unless they just steal loads of ideas, in which case the whole inspiring 'creativity' thing just isn't working. lol

Paw and Sparrow: Thank you very much!

Interesting question!

Personally I don't mind when very young members copy/are inspired by my fan stuff, because through personal experience their reasons have appeared innocent. But when I see older members copying my stuff I tend to question their motives more (especially if the fan stuff they are copying is popular at the time) .
Drummer looks cute here, btw!

inspiration is a compliment. copying is an insult.

That is a very interesting question. I think it's actually a bit flattering when someone copies your character. The fact that they chose to copy that character instead of any others shows that there must be something interesting or appealing about your character's design or bio.
However, I can imagine it is rather disheartening when you've come up with something unique about your character that makes them stand out from all others, only for someone else to copy it.
I think it's probably alright for people to take a few vague details from someone else's characters, but it's unoriginal and a bit disrespectful to copy them too much. And copying them to the point where they're basically stealing that character is obviously wrong.
