The problems Disney had with The Lion King!

The problems Disney had with The Lion King!

As everyone knows, TLK was a great success! But not EVERY cloud has a silver lining... did you ever think about the troubles they had...?

The Lion King started off well. How hard could it be to create a movie with the basic animations, based on Hamlet, that has the story already written out for you, which all you have to do is give it a Disney Twist?

Alot harder than you may think.

Disney had problems with the film when it came out. People accused them of being racist, not showing African people or having any african words in it.

Disney argued, at first, that it was a children's movie and that they didn't need people to tell a story about animals.

They then went on to say, "Where would people fit in?"

Most people were referring to Kimba the white lion and how they had people in it, in fact, a human was almost the main part of the feature film.

By this stage, Disney had given news about the books, the Lion King Six New Adventures.

They claimed they would have people in it. This stopped the critisisims... for a while.

Suddenly, during a interveiw a director said, "I don't know why they say those things; Rafiki was based on a Tribe's Witch Doctor and Hakuna Matata was another Tribe's language for 'No Worries'.

Then the books came out and the uproar began again. Although they wern't as bad this time, a cork on the fishing hook you could say, as Disney had included in nearly every story about TLK, an African word.

When the sequel came out, once again they started. This time Disney said about Upendi, the whole theme of the song was the African Word.

This toned down the critisisims. When 1 and a half came out no-one said a word. However, the critisisims still hang today...

Siobhan-There would be no twist really, because Hamlet is humans lol

Overall article-It IS ridiculous/. Almost all of the names mean something in Swahili!

I think having human characters would've RUINED this movie, the drama and heritage is all in the story, criticizers of TLK are just ignorant. And the Kimba story-line past episode 2 is weird and childish the way the Canadian production team did it (I've only seen that version of it+don't mean to sound racist).

I only just read this article and I have found it very interesting. They say that the Lion King had no African words in it. You have mentioned that Hakuna Matata means No Worries in Swahili but There are a few more than that. Simba means Lion in Swahili and Rafiki means friend. I know this because I have a Kenyan pen pal and I mentioned the Lion King in my letters. In later movies, Kovu means Scar and Nuka means Stink plus other names (just something you might like to know)!

Sorry SarabiMirage123, I havn't been on for a while so this is a late post. Thx. I really think that would be a good idea cuz of the idea of mixing humans and animals together in a story, making hamlet a different kind of twist. ;)

I like your idea, Siobhan, but wouldn't that take the lion out of lion king?:P

Talking about that humans should be in lion king king, wouldn't it be an idea if they make a lion king 4 wich is about africans americans coming too Africa, sum gud su bad. Sum want to shoot animals for their skins and the other humans try to stop them! The lions fight back and the story goin on with the lions at the beggining could be how they always start off! They pick an african song to open out the beggining and show covu's and kiara's chilldren! Timone and Pumba's story in it could be meeting the Hienas and they become kind to eachother then the hieana's get on their side. So all the animals think the humans are a threat and this is before the battle, that Simba is walking until he hears the humans and hides behind a bush. There's the car they drive in and two groups of humans. They're arguing about fighting the animals as one team is sayin, " lets not fight2 while the other group is disagreeing. Simba tells the rest but they dont beleive him, only Kovu does. Kiara and Nala fight with simba, (argue.) They soon forgive eachother and go to fight. The good humans join with the lions and the lions dont attack but the good humans are confrused. They fight and the one in-charge of the bad group of humans die by slipping into the car thingy, then the car thingy rocks and falls down the gorge, (where simba is for scars evil plan in the first movie/Mufasa's death) and dies becaus eof the big fall. As soon as that happens. The fight stops and the bad team realise that they dont need the lions skins for clothes. What I think any way. Then if they amke a 5th one it should be about Kiara's and Kovu's children for deffinate, what do you think? xx

There were African chants used in the movie. There was Nants ingonyama, and Rafiki's asante sana chant. And why will there be people in it. It's an animated story about a lion's journey to be king. So, people shouldn't be in the movie.

Sibohan2121 -- Actually, in the first movie, they're more of a greenish gray. In the second, however, the animators got incredibly lazy and they made Nala's eyes a medium dark ocean blue.

I have spotted an animation problem with lion king. You see, when Nala wakes up Timone and Pumba and she's in there face and Timone freaks out, there's sumit' wrong with Nala with animation! While Nala was asking Timone and Pumba where Simba was and Timone says,
" I dunno wasn't he with you?" well, I noticed, Nala's eyes were green and all the way through the movie, they're blue. So there is totally sumit' wrong with that. xx

"No African words in it" they said? Erm, and all the character names don't count then, do they? And the Afro-american voice actors? Or the Lebo M-composed vocals? Or all the research put into capturing the African landscapes?

Where did this criticism come from? I must say, I've never heard of it before.

Er- there doesn't need to be humans in EVERY movie. That would be boring. Ugh, some people are stupid...

I feel like people now a days are just desperate to find things to be mad about. I loved in the lion king how there wern't any humans in it and I think they put in a good balance of african words. I mean its not just about the words itself, music, voices, etc.
And I agree with Elchivat, this is WAYY too short of an artical.

Lol @ the silly people who roar racism out of the most ridiculous reasons imaginable. And aren't most of the characters' names African words? Simba, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Nala, Sarabi...?

The whole tone of the story would've changed if they'd added people anywhere in it.

I find this a bit too short for an article, especially as this topic could've been milked more, but at least this has content not too often (if ever before this?) brought out, and laied out in a simple and clear way with good grammar.

But still, if you have the time, you could easily make this more quality as an article.

Thank you. :)
