My Little Pony: The Movie

Hello readers! There’s not much animation news to report on this week’s Weekly News, but I do have a few news stories to provide. This being how Smurfs: The Lost Village is performing in theatres, the first teaser trailer of My Little Pony: The Movie, and the surprise comeback of Invader Zim.

Smurfs: The Lost Village is disappointingly blue

With Smurfs: The Lost Village, Sony Pictures Animation has been hoping this reboot will redeem the franchise after their two terrible live-action views. Unfortunately, it’s not looking too smurfy when it comes to the critics and box office.

While many reviews considered it an improvement over the live-action duds, they were still left unimpressed. The critics stated that the very predictable writing and lack of ambition make this mediocre adventure appeal solely for kids and die-hard Smurfs fans. Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle criticised the film by saying “[it] has the look of a film that was rushed, and made on a tight budget. At best, it’s an adequate cinematic babysitter.” The A.V. Club’s Ignatiy Vishnevetsky was less-unfavourable by calling it “An inoffensive children’s film with an above-average voice cast, competent animation, and no product placement. This is enough to make it the finest film ever made about the Smurfs.”

Smurfs: The Lost Village also underperformed financially in it’s opening weekend, debuting third with $14 million behind the Beauty and the Beast remake (#2) and DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby (#1). Doesn’t seem like a good start to Sony Pictures Animation’s revival, but at least they still have The Emoji Movie and The Star for this year.

My Little Pony: The Movie - BIG Announcement!

Bronies and pegasisters, the teaser trailer you’ve been waiting for is finally here! Lionsgate has released the first teaser trailer of My Little Pony: The Movie!

The teaser doesn’t really reveal much, since it’s more of an announcement that shows us the upgraded animation style from the show, and the many celebrities who are participating in the movie. But from what’s been shown, it looks like a promising treat for the fans.

For those excited (or “nervous-cited”), My Little Pony: The Movie will be out in US cinemas on October 6. Madman Entertainment will also give it a theatrical release in Australia and New Zealand, though no date is set yet.

Invader Zim returns in TV movie

Prepare yourself, because Invader Zim is returning! Nickelodeon has confirmed that their cult sci-fi series will be making a comeback with a new 90-minute animated TV movie!

Invader Zim

This is great news for fans like me, as we’ll once again witness with evil Zim and his dim-witted robot companion GIR attempt to destroy Earth. The original voice cast, along with the show’s creator Jhonen Vasquez will return for the first time since the show’s cancellation a decade ago.

Nick’s senior VP, Content Development and Production, Animation, Chris Viscardi said: “As a network that prides itself on a 25-year history of creating groundbreaking, hilarious animation for kids, Invader Zim is one of our great loves. It’s been so exciting to see its popularity grow over the last decade through social media, consumer products, and the Zim comic books.”

Invader Zim is the latest in Nick’s plans of reviving their classic properties as TV movies, along with the upcoming Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, and a Rocko’s Modern Life TV special. No release date is set yet, but Nick did prove us with a audio teaser with Zim and GIR.

XD The trailer for Invader Zim is great! I didn't know that show and wasn't interested at first but the voice and mystery around the trailer are cool =D

For MLP, you just pick up the picture I disliked the most in the trailer xD They had a problem with the shadding, but still I'm curious to see it too.
