Tangled: The Series

Hello guys, and welcome to another Weekly News. There was little to report on this week, but I will be talking about the unfortunate cancelation of DreamWorks’ Larrikins, and new details on Tangled: The Series.

DreamWorks kills off Larrikins

We are sad to report that another future project from DreamWorks Animation, Larrikins, has officially been put on the chopping block. This is the second DreamWorks project to be canceled following the Comcast/NBCUniversal buyout, the first being The Croods 2.

[Peter de Sève]

Larrikins, originally scheduled for February 2018, was to be a musical from the mind of Australian comedian/musician Tim Minchin. The story was intended to be about a bilby who goes on an Australian Outback road trip with a music band. Chris Miller (director of Puss in Boots) was co-directing the movie with Minchin, and the script was written by Harry Cripps.

Minchin broke the news in a post on his website by saying: “I’ve recently been working in 3 different continents, missing my kids a lot, sleeping too little and not playing piano enough. And then a couple of days ago, the animated film to which I’ve dedicated the last 4 years of my life was shut down by the new studio execs.”

This cancellation means 2018 will be the first year that DreamWorks Animation will be absent since 1999. Once Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie releases this June, we won’t be seeing another DreamWorks movie until March 2019 with How to Train Your Dragon 3 (now to be DreamWorks’ first Universal-distributed film).

After the heartbreaking announcement, Ice Age character designer Peter de Sève posted some of his Larrikins concept art onto his Twitter account.

It’s really unfortunate Larrikins got shelved, because I was rather curious about this project. An Australian-themed musical seemed like a great idea for DreamWorks to create, and I can tell it must have been devastating for Minchin and the rest of the crew to have all their hard work scrapped. Having this and The Croods 2 scrapped makes me worried about the state of the studio under new ownership right now, but I do hope things somehow improve later.

DreamWorks Animation’s current schedule is now the following:

  • The Boss Baby (March 31, 2017, released by Fox)
  • Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (June 2, 2017, released by Fox)
  • How to Train Your Dragon 3 (March 1, 2019, released by Universal)
  • Everest (September 27, 2019, released by Universal)
  • Trolls 2 (April 10, 2020, released by Universal)
  • Source: Cartoon Brew

Teaser | Tangled: The Series

Now that the feature-length appetiser known as Tangled: Before Ever After has aired, it’s time for the main course with Tangled: The Series! The series will debut at 7:30pm on Friday, March 24 on Disney Channel US, and a new teaser trailer has been released.

Screener has listed the names of the first six episode which will broadcast weekly. These include:

  • E01: What the Hair?!
  • E02: Rapunzel's Enemy
  • E03: Fitzherbert P.I.
  • E04: Challenge of the Brave
  • E05: Cassandra v. Eugene
  • E06: The Return of Strongbow

So are you disappointed about Larrikins being cancelled? Excited for Tangled: The Series? Tell me your thoughts in the comments, and I shall return with more hopefully-good news stories.
