Is there any website anyone knows of which you can read full books for free? I have a handful in my favorites, but they don't have this one, and I really want to read it...

read the book in 1976 on loan from a friend . have been looking for a copy but no luck as yet
the story has something about it that reflects on the way things were back then in 1960's

I read the book when I was in middle school. It is not a "dark" tale, rather one of changing times as human "civilization" inexorably encroaches upon what was once a free land. In that land, humans and animals accepted their roles, and the author does a wonderful job in explaining the idea of the hunter and hunted. I have not watched the Disney version. It seems much too lighthearted. I must say that in recent times, I have seen examples of different animal species helping each other. It is a lesson all of us can learn from.

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Well that's those European authors for you, Cooper. lol Salten's material is as dark as anything the Brothers Grimm ever dreamed up!

I used to love the movie growing up, one of my favorites. I was very supprised to find out that it came from such a dark and twisted tale.

I agree with you, JerseyCaptian. I'm too afraid to read the novel as well, I'm afraid it will change my feeling of the movie for me. I already love it and I don't want that to change.
I never read the Bambi books ethier, but I didn't know they were supposed to be dark too. I thought they were supposed to be children's books? The only thing I know about it is that Bambi was originally a roe deer instead of a whit-tailed deer and he has two fawns. But that's it:!
