When Lucy and Gru fail to capture the highly wanted Balthazar Bratt (a former child actor from the 1980s) after he stole the Dumont Diamond, they find themselves out of a job when Valerie Da Vinci, the new director of the Anti Villain League, fires them for failing their mission. Not long after their unfortunate departure from the Anti villain league, an older gentlemen in a top hat and suit approached Gru in his front yard and announces, after being blasted away on a vaccum that Agnes was trying to sell, that his twin brother, Dru, who lives in on a island (also a country) called Freedonia, wishes to reconnect with him. Feeling confused and wanting answers, Gru confronts his mother about Dru. She explains to Gru that when she divorced their father shortly after they were born, they made an agreement to each take a child. They also decided to never see each other again, so Gru was told that his father was dead.
After Gru, Lucy, the girls and a couple of the minions travel to Freedonia to meet up with Dru at his mansion, Gru goes off to spend some quality time with his brother. Dru explains to him that his wealth is due to their father also being a legendary supervillian, and then requests that he teach him how to be a villain, as their father saw him as a disgrace. Gru refuses his brother’s request at first and explains that he’s left that life behind, but is eventually persuaded to go on one last heist when Dru finds out that Bratt has stolen the diamond yet again. However, Gru secretly takes advantage of the idea and intends to return the diamond to AVL in hopes to restore his and Lucy's job.
