Minions source color layout

Written by BaltoSeppala :

Hey everyone!  So we've been receiving feedback on the question of the layout of Minions Source, specifically pertaining to the color scheme.  The reactions have been varied.  And I will give you an honest appraisal of them.  And it comes down mostly to "Art 101"...understanding the concepts of complementary colors and relative brightness or shadiness.

The

MOST people have said they like the layout and colors of Minions Source.  And we chose those colors because those are the colors of the minions...not only the yellow minions seen throughout the movie franchise, but also the transformed evil purple minions seen in Despicable Me 2.  The production designer and art department of that movie didn't choose purple for the evil minions by accident.  Purple (or what some refer to as "violet") is a natural complementary color for yellow.  Yellow is a primary color, and purple is a secondary color.  That's how the color wheel works...and it works just as much in nature as in art.  Primary and secondary colors complement each other (think holly bushes and their berries).  And the various shades of those two colors also complement each other.  We all learn this in basic art classes (there's a reason, after all, that the accepted and dominant colors of Christmas are red and green...following that same color scheme as noted earlier with the holly bush example).

A couple of people, however, think that the colors we chose for Minions Source "clash".  These couple of people will not change our minds on the colors selected.  They simply don't understand how the color wheel works.  However, a few others thought that the brightness of the yellow, against the light purple (more of a lavender) are a bit too much for the eyes.  That we do respect, if we don't necessarily agree (and not everyone thought it is too bright).  However, to accommodate as many members as we can, and to respect everyone's eyesight, we will be working to tone down the yellow for you guys, and we hope that will resolve any concerns about how bright things are.

Minions Source is not the only brightly-colored site in the Animation Source family.  With respect to the others, not every source site is going to consist of muted blues, grays, greens, browns, tans and reds.  That would be rather repetitive and uncreative.  Those other sources stand on their own merits, and have good layouts.  But while we don't believe that every source should have a muted, dark or earthy color scheme, we don't want you to think we intended for Minions Source to be neon bright either!  lol

We'll try to tone it down in the next day or so.  I don't know how that will yet work out, because I'm not a graphics site builder.  However, I will confer with Mightybalto1925 and -Legolas10-, and we'll do what we can.  Thanks for your patience, your feedback and your support!

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
The colors are most definitely not "blinding". We are not even going to entertain playing around with this anymore. The design is set. The colors are set. If you are actually being "blinded" by what you are seeing on the screen, then clearly it is a problem of the settings on your device. Not in the colors and layout chosen. As suggested in another fan news, my recommendation is to adjust the settings on your device. Nothing else is being adjusted here. We've done as much as we're going to.

Not that feedback isn't appreciated. But as to this matter, we've gone around with it, and done everything we can, in consultation with a variety of members and with the moderators. The very large majority like it the way it is now, and want it to stay that way.

I really don't see how the yellow or purple (especially not the purple) is "blinding." I realize that not everyone sees colors the same way, and that not every computer monitor (the colors on my MacBook Pro are vastly different than from my Toshiba and Dell) renders colors the same way another one does, but I don't get how either of the colors are painful to look at.

Your opinion matters, but the colors that are currently here now are likely to stay. But thanks for your input!

Here is a comparison between my MacBook Pro with retina display (if that makes a difference), Toshiba (which is in the middle, and it isn't that dark) and Dell. This may not be the best photo to show their differences, but I tried. http://i.imgur.com/JDHTLmm.jpg

I see what your saying here, but I've noticed that yes, there are complementary colors we learned in Art 101, and very early on. But, that isn't necessarily true. I've noticed when playing around with colors I've been able to get about any of the major colors, (yellow, blue, green, purple, red and orange) to work in certain shades. For example, I've been able to get orange and purple to work together. But, the trick to it is finding the right shades. I believe you when these two colors are meant to compliment each other, but I personly do not. It seems the yellow is either too bright, or the purple isn't dark enough. Maybe if the purple was altered slightly the yellow wouldn't look so blinding? I know this likely isn't going to be much help, but it was worth a try anyway. I hope this isn't pushed to the side and ignored. Because I am too a member of AS and would LOVE to see this source thrive!

Well no worries. You didn't upset anyone with what you said. You spoke quite well before, even if the choice of the particular word you used was in error (by your own statement). Trust me, we appreciate what you said earlier!

Meh.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything derogatory by my word choice. I simply didn't have the right word to describe the differing taste among members when it came to the color choice. I wouldn't consider the color choice a hindrance on the overall layout since it was rationally thought out and well executed.

I was simply trying to get across that the color brightness and contrast is a minor detail (or what some would consider a problem/"flaw") that should not cause the community to react negatively to the entire website. At that point it's just nit-picking; and it is rude to the designers.

I agree with Mighty--first, thank you Somes for that nice post! But the "flaw" you mention is really only in the eyes of about three people, and while we did work to accommodate their concerns, it just comes down to their own observations of the colors and relative brightness. That's not a flaw, it's simply their opinions.

Thanks for you feedback, Somes! We wanted Minions Source to be unique in its design, which I believe we pulled off! But I'm not sure what you mean by a "flaw." Not everyone has to like the design of the site, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a "flaw."

Meh.
Our site builders for Minions Source did a wonderful job in their layout and color choices. I appreciate their creativity in color scheme and their attempts to accommodate other member's opinions. A lot of hard work has gone into building the website, and I hope all members will recognize and appreciate all of the hard work put into designing Minions Source. Even if there may be a minor flaw some members do not accept, there are many perfections that should be recognized by the community.

Thanks, Never! I think a deeper purple in the boxes would only make the purple text harder to read. We had to go with a purple text because the white hyperlinks, and even yellow title text, were washed out against any yellow backgrounds. It had to be this way. Lavender, it would seem, is the best course for the boxes...which was what we had from the start. But we've kept the basic yellow-purple theme.

I think the colors or fine, but maybe a deeper purple, perhaps? Seeing the colors are complimentary and there were both yellow and purple minions, then I see this color scheme as a good choice. As my first visit to the site, I think it's fine. Great job the the site builders ^.^
