Being the only fully animated feature of Turner Entertainment's feature animation unit (which was later turned into Warner Brothers Animation), the film was thrown into movie theatres by Warner Bros. Family Entertainment.
Cats Don't Dance's cast included the voices of Scott Bakula, Jasmine Guy, Natalie Cole, Ashley Peldon, John Rhyes-Davies, Kathy Najimy, and Don Knotts, and was directed by Mark Dindal. The film was a debut of the former Disney animator Mark Dindal. Also, the movie is known for it's musical numbers (made by Randy Newman) and for Gene Kelly's choreography. Since Cats Don't Dance was Gene's last and final film project, they dedicated the film to him in 1997.
The final budget of the film costed $32,000,000 US, and the gross revenue contained a total of $3,566,637.
