In Zootopia, we are given a chance to see many different kinds of mammals, from across the planet, living together "in peace and harmony", as civilized and intelligent (and sentient) beings. And while the production team and writers went to a great deal of trouble to include as many mammals (at least visually) as they could, certainly there are others which were not (yet) seen.

So what I'd like to do is to present some possibilities for other mammal types for (relatively and reasonably) open discussion for original character types and future sequel possibilities. I have linked several videos, from YouTube, which feature the animal adventurer/naturalist "Coyote Peterson" who, like his predecessors (late Australian Steve Irwin, Brit Nigel Marven, and American Jeff Corwin), does a show which features different animals. And he's actually pretty clever in how he presents his material. Of course, in some cases, I had to use videos from other sources that are not Coyote's...

I will add more stuff as I go along of course. But let's start off with these, and hopefully it will spark the kind of discussion I mentioned above. The videos will be embedded and also linked (for those of you who cannot activate the embedded videos).

A badger character, now there's an interesting idea. I might work something out on that, and also on that lynx character I mentioned in the shout box. As for other species, hm... Maybe some Australian animals would make some nice additions, like dingos, kangaroos and koalas and such. I'm just throwing this out there, but I wouldn't mind seeing those mentioned species in a possible sequel. I know there is a koala news anchor in the Australian version, but I'd certainly like to see other Australian animals.

I've never heard of a pine marten, but it sure is cute! Along with the ocelot and lagoon mouse, I would love to see them added in a possible sequel. Of course the others are nice too, but these three stand out to me the most. :p

I would personally like to see some birds added to the film. Birds like penguins, birds of prey, and waterfowl. As for other animals, maned wolves, meerkats, capybaras, and prairie dogs come to mind.

I have a red panda very close to completion. Eventually I hope to make a sugar glider and a giant red flying squirrel too!
If you guys have never seen these before, search up some images... Those sugar gliders are too cute <3

I'm not in a position to add profiles for these due to my limited art skills, but for anyone who's interested here's some species I expect to include in Zootopia projects as they unfold:

Giant Flying Fox Bat (Shade)
Lynx
Koala
Monkey or Chimpanzee (leaning toward a Rhesus Monkey)
Possibly a warthog extra (looking for animals that would make imposing street hoods to someone Judy or Nick's size)

Admittedly most of my efforts writing-wise have dealt more with presenting the main characters faithfully, but I'll be looking for ideas as I need them.

I also had a mouse character in mind, but since mice were covered in the movie I might make him a kangaroo rat or something just for the heck of it.

Also, though this has nothing to do with my plans, I remember someone mentioning the prospect of anthros based on extinct animals like sabertooths (not sure I can see that for Zootopia, although I plan to use at least two such characters in a somewhat similar book).

Well, as to this particular animal lineage, you might want to read this article, especially by scrolling down to the subsection titled "There are no apes": http://io9.gizmodo.com/inside-secrets-of-zootopia-the-new-film-from-the-maker-1748640504

This, if I am not mistaken, comes from a quote in one of the many interviews with the directors (particularly Byron Howard and Richard Moore), who explained that the primate lineage was left out intentionally, for the reasons stated (in simpler form) in the article. So all primates (including our species) are anathema to the Zootopia universe.

I think your other ideas are good, except maybe that, if you did a saber-toothed cat (or other prehistoric mammal species), you'd probably have to do a "period piece"...an fan fiction set in prehistoric times in that universe, and perhaps write it similarly to how the "Clan of the Cave Bear" books are written (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1295.The_Clan_of_the_Cave_Bear) or, perhaps, the way the movie adaptation of the first book (which I just linked) tells the story. Here is the trailer:

Or, perhaps, another book about prehistory, "Quest For Fire" (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2005466.Quest_for_Fire), adapted into a movie in 1981:

Well Coyote Peterson and his team did several "behind the scenes" featurettes for certain episodes, and the pine marten is one of them! I have included it below, as well as a couple of videos about "Teddy Bear", the porcupine whom I showed some of you about in the shoutbox some days ago! Teddy, for those who don't know, is a North American porcupine who is accustomed to humans and human contact, and lives at a wildlife center called "Zooniversity", located in Dallas, Texas (Teddy is well cared for, being "an ambassador for his species", just as Coyote Peterson said about the pine marten in his video). What's amazing about Teddy is that he's VERY vocal, and you'll get to hear his ridiculously-cute voice in the videos, as he "talks" to his caretaker! (Which could give you ideas about voicing such a character in a Zootopia setting! lol) XD In the end, with Teddy and his talking, it's really about him being in a happy place because he's being fed treats he likes.

After somebody else posts in response, I'll then post some more animal videos to discuss other mammal options! Including, as requested, Australian ones.

(Again, as before, I included the direct links to each video below them if you cannot get the embedded ones to work...)

Teddy is too cute, and I love the silly sounds he makes. XD Whoever would of thought a porcupine would make such a sound? lol

I mentioned this in another thread, but I thought it might be interesting if they decided to include extinct mammals, like the Tasmanian Tiger or the Quagga. Because if Zootopia is a world where humans never existed (and because of this domestic dogs and cats do not exist in Zootopia), then in theory animals that went extinct directly because of humans rather than environmental reasons, etc. would still exist.

I think that has some merit, so long as it were mammals that went extinct due to recent human activities in that regard, and not prehistoric mammals (where human involvement in extinction has not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt...like in the case of the wooly mammoth, for instance...recent scientific documentaries and discoveries, including analyses of several of the recently-discovered carcasses of young mammoths, are pointing towards natural climate change as having been a factor too).

Okay, so this may take a bit to load up, as this topic is already video-heavy, but I wanted to do it that way.

Here are some more mammal options we haven't yet looked into (nor did the directors and writers...except for the honey badger, who appears briefly in the movie as a doctor working at the Cliffside Asylum), apparently. I've included the Tasmanian Devil too, as a prequel for our subsequent launch into the Australian continent (even though the Tasmanian Devil isn't Australian) in my next posting...which will come later...

I'm currently developing a penguin character. He's a Little Penguin, which live on the coasts of New Zealand and Australia. I plan to tie him in with Mr. Big and Koslov.

I could just adopt all of those little flat feet ;_; Anyway, I'm about to start working my lynx character, and was thinking of giving him a raccoon friend, and kind of his partner in crime, lol. (Yes, I was going to make him a street lowlife, kind of like Duke Weaselton.) I will gladly welcome any ideas for their personalities and how they would fit in Zootopia.

Penguins are such funny, goofy animals. lol Good luck with the character!

We've all been envisioning bird characters in the Zootopia universe. Though, while Byron Howard and Richard Moore have left that door open for future sequels, they didn't specify that there either would or wouldn't be. So it's still an open question.

I certainly can't wait to see this lynx! And pairing him up with a raccoon should make things quite interesting! It sounds like a good match.

Glad you're liking the idea! As I said, I'm gladly welcoming any idea anyone might have to develop these characters and their stories.

Okay, I guess I'll have to rethink that. Any thoughts on a good animal to work in a computer department? Maybe some kind of rodent?

lol You misunderstand me. The prehistoric(ish) characters are for another project entirely; one which, although it deals with anthros similar in some respects to those in Zootopia, would be very difficult to effectively manage into a crossover (as fun as that would be). I only mentioned that as an aside, since other people had spoken of the prospect.

On a side note, I'm thinking of including a skunk character. Still working on the details (and whether or not she even really needs to figure in), but at the very least I may make a profile for her if I can get the artwork. She was going to be part of a comical scene or two in one of my fanfics, but then the story took a twist which rendered those bits obsolete.
