Leonhard Seppala left from Nome, driving his team 170 miles to Shaktoolik, traveling up to 84 miles one day. Coupled with the return trip from Shaktoolik to Golovin, his total distance was an astonishing 261 miles! This is the team that was led by Togo, and seconded by Fritz.)

Statues & Mounts

Balto Statue The most famous "Serum Run landmark" would be the bronze Balto statue in New York Central Park. Built in 1925 by sculpter Frederick George Richard Roth. It describes on the text, "Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxins 660 miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925.Endurance - Fidelity - Intelligence"

Balto's Mount Balto passed away in the confort of Cleveland, were he still is today, mounted in the 'Cleveland Museum of Natural History'. Some people believe his body should be in Nome, but Cleveland deserves Balto as they rescued him and his team mates and he lived there happily as a hero for the last years of his life. His fur is now faded from his original black. You can visit him and his exhibition still and even buy Balto merchindise in the gift shop! Here is the link if you want more information: http://www.cmnh.org/site/

Togo's Mount Togo was too mounted and can be found in the Iditarod Trail Museum in Wasilla, Alaska. It was first displayed in Vermont but a campaign brought Togo back to his original home state thankfully. Unfortunatly though, the mount is not in its best state.

Fritz Mount Fritz, one of Leonard Seppala's dogs from the Serum Run, has also been mounted and can be found at the "Carrie L. McLean Memorial Museum and Library" located in Nome.
Here is an interesting article BaltoSeppala found: http://www.adn.com/front/story/6163088p-6042574c.html

P.S. How come mods of this section love to make sticky topics so much?

I guess Speciffic Forum Mods like to create Sticky Topics because they have the only place as their own sections for using XD not as Global ones.

Altough,nice Sticky.

I'd like everyone who comes here to know that, beginning today and through the weekend (and continuing onward through the coming months), I am going to be reposting a lot of the historical material I had posted here originally, back when I was the section moderator for this...section. Heh. And new stuff too! That will include stuff on Balto, Togo, Leonhard Seppala, Gunnar Kaasen, the Serum Run in general, and more! And there will be pictures too! This will include the very latest revisions to anything I posted before which may have contained notational errors.

Each will have its own topic. Keep watching!

That is great to hear BaltoSeppala! :P As I already stated, people feel free to post questions, and BaltoSeppala (if you wish) you feel free to answer them! This topic isn't just about asking me questions, its for discussing, anyone can ask or reply!
