You know, I still haven't exactly decided how I should expand the Animation Source site.
But in any case, I didn't resist to bring up some news on what's happening in animation lately.
A new Mickey video game is planned to be released exclusively on the Wii, in late 2010. And what a game! This is clearly something I wouldn't have expected before. (especially in the current society where companies want to take the least possible risks and cutting down budgets on everything)
Epic Mickey takes a 1930's Mickey Mouse into a dark world where he has to face ennemies such as the Mad Doctor or Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit (a character created by Disney in the 1920's, who lost him to Universal for rights reasons - Mickey was actually created as a "replacement" for him!), or other Disney characters which (almost) everyone has forgotten about. Warren Spector, a developer whose previous works include PC games like Ultima Underworld, Wing Commander, Thief / Dark project or Deus-EX, is the main creator of the game. And he's a long-time Disney fan, which is pretty reassuring for the future of the game.
I'm a bit disappointed in the fact it's a 3D game and not 2D (which would respect the original cartoons even more and would be closer to the artworks), though some levels will apparently be played in 2D old-fashioned gameplay too. The game will include platform, adventure, and even RPG elements! And it will be possible to be a "good" Mickey by doing the right actions, or a "bad" one who will help the ennemies, the game playing differently according to your actions (that pretty much seems like a good idea, especially for the replay value!)
What's the most interesting is the revelation that Disney asked for this game, insisting to "move the character in a new direction"! (which is the opposite of what happened with Kingdom Hearts when Squaresoft asked Disney for the use of the licence) Are they finally getting in the right direction? Are we entering a new area, with them getting back to the roots of their success (including the upcoming Princess & The Frog), making stuff that everyone can enjoy without categorization?
Here are some scans of gameplay screenshots :
Pretty good for a Wii game, if you ask me. And they still got a full year before the release to improve it!
And here's a nice video of the game, including an awesome music :
If you want to talk about the game, go to the Epic Mickey video game topic.
Talking about Kingdom Hearts, don't forget the release of the newest game in the series, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
Personally, I find this game to be sub-par when compared to the two PS2 games, recycling too much (same worlds, same musics, ...), repetitive and giving up the Disney side of the series. Although, fans of the previous games owning a Nintendo DS will be sure to get their hands on it, and it's still a good game overall. Just take it as it is : a game designed for fans only.
Otherwise, save your money for the other portable Kingdom Hearts game coming up, Kingdom Hearts : Birth by Sleep on Playstation Portable, which (from the previews) is much better on every side and may even be the best in the series yet.
And, it would be a shame to forget the "one which started it all"! Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been released to Blu-ray and DVD, with a picture restoration to fit your HD screens.
Available pretty much everywhere, and selling like a piece of cake. (top #1 on Amazon.com) Pretty nice for a 70+ years old lady, isn't it?
