NEW fan characters section - Categories!

Written by steet :

It's been a long while since I've been Characters Categoriesworking on that, but it's finally here!

Lately, there have been many issues surrounding the moderation of fan creations, and in particular the fan characters : too many characters to validate, long waits for validations,... But the biggest source of problems, is that each person has different opinions on what SHOULD or SHOULDN'T be accepted in this section. And this leads to conflicts between the members and the mods, and none would really know what rules to follow.

Well here is my solution. No more characters deactivated! Instead, each character has categories, that you must fill when you send one.

For example, one of them : "Is the character a 'Sparkledog'?" (on Balto Source)

What's the point? Well, now, you can add your own filters on what YOU don't want to see in that section. If you don't like Sparkledogs : at the bottom of the characters page, add a filter to remove them from appearing on ALL the site!
Also, categories make searches a lot of more fun. At the top of the characters page, you'll find the available categories that you can search, and you can combine. For example, it's now possible to find "Blue Female" characters, or "Detailed characters who appear in at least one fan creation"!
By the way, if you think there is a category missing, you can send me suggestions : it's now very easy for me to add new categories! (almost everything is automatized)

Because there are a LOT of characters already sent, and it would be too hard for the mods to do it alone, anyone can "fill the blanks" on any character page - so that, progressively, all characters will be fully "categorized". The help of everyone is welcome! Of course, the mods and the owner of the characters will always be able to make changes.

This comes with another big change. Now that the site has grown a lot bigger, this was becoming the best solution : characters will now be immediately validated! Which means : no more waiting days until it appears, and no more headaches from the mods to validate and study hundred of characters.

Of course I had to make a few changes to counter-balance this. When reporting a character, you will now be able to choose "wrong category" as the reason. Now, the mods job will be more based on reports, and instead of deciding if a character should be accepted or not, they just have to check if the chosen categories are correct or not.
To reflect that, the characters rules are now MUCH more lighter : only real offending characters should be deactivated (violence/blood or sexual), which is how it should have been from the start.

Of course, all this is just a part of a bigger plan...this system will be eventually extended to ALL the fan sections!

I'm hoping you like it!

What Tibb said.

This is great. Attract more members! More members who aren't interested in these movies but ARE interested in putting their characters on a site they can be internets popular!
And even better; it won't be deactivated for being either fail, sparkly or completely unrelated!

This is a fantastic decision! I don't see any point in seeing characters that are made for the sake of it and aren't used in art/images/fiction. Plus those of us who don't like canine characters invading SS can now igore them altogether!
Brilliant idea - it will let everyone have more freedom when creating characters, but we have the choice whether or not to care :P

I'm not a wolf. Kthxbai.
Really, I only see problems coming from this. Especially now that mods don't have to check them there are going to be bad characters coming from every which way.

This is a band-aid.

spotted--> its not automatic for the ones sent in before this it seems. Plus you'll still need to edit your characters information with the new categories.

This is a great thing, in my opinion. It will solve a lot of problems. However, I do have a question/statement. I was editing my characters and did my fursona Hunter first. I noticed something. Hunter isn't a sparkledog, because her colors aren't bright and flashing and she only has one thing unrealisitic but then I thought about it. Cause the two categories for that are "Realistic" and "Sparkledog/Unrealistic"

Shouldn't there be three seperate filters? Because I thought about it and a lot of characters are unrealistic but aren't sparkledogs in the least. So shouldn't there be "realistic", "sparkledog", and "unrealistic"?

I'm glad you're running this site steet. It's nice to see an owner care so much about the site and read all of those pms that have been about this issue *mine in cluded* I honestly think you're trying to please everyone and that's what makes me smile. I think you're the best webmaster on a site i've been on. Keep up the good work!♥

I do hope this works out, it would be nice not having to have to go through so many characters everyday. Its a never ending number. Some members just resubmit the character after its deactivated without changing what's wrong. Maybe there could be some way too keep them from resubmitting until something has changed? now THAT would be nice.

Only problem is we mods still have to look at those horrid characters xD we can't block them completely. Though I will be setting that up for if I'm browsing for sure.

It's not "entirely automated", if you read again you'll notice that most of the system needs human actions.

I'm not keen on this whole automated system, but I'll just go with the flow.

I really hope this helps stop all the arguments c: Personally, I think it is very good thing that there is a filter. Removing sprakledogs altogether would probably lead into more huge arguments and allowing them to mix in with the realistic characters would also cause more arguments as it had. I just hope everyone is as grateful to have a filter as I am.

(Also means I can send in AWDs :3)

If you add "sparkledogs" in filter, they won't appear ANYWHERE. (if categories are correctly filled, of course) If YOU don't want to see them, fine, but why should you prevent the others who like them to SEE them?

I don't think there's any other solution to make everyone happy and stop useless conflicts.

Tbh, I still know these things are here. And as long as I know they are here, I know other people know that these things are here.
So I'm guessing alot of people are still angry. Just sayin'.

I'll send a specific PM to moderators tomorrow, in order to explain more clearly what I expect from them.
