The Mystery of the White Wolf

The Mystery of the White Wolf

Is the White Wolf from the original film the same as Aniu in Wolf Quest?

WolfThe scene is unforgettable to many Balto fans: Balto has just fallen from the high, rocky cliff while trying to save the medicine that is desparetely needed for the townschildren. He seems to be defeated, as if all hope is lost. Suddenly he looks up to see a beautiful white lupine towering above him. The ivory creature howls, as if to aknowledge its own fellow wolf. The hybrid shifts his head away, as if to ignore the visitor. After the wolf disappears into the misty snow, Balto realizes what he must do and begins to howl back to his brethren. The White Wolf reappears like magic and the two begins to howl in an almost synchronized harmony. After the scene ends, it is the last that is seen of this mysterious lupine. However, Wolf Quest introduces Aniu, a character who shows a similarity to the original White Wolf. After watching both films many times, Balto fans have been wondering about this dillemma: Is it possible for these two wolves to be the exact same character?

First, let's start with the basic stats.

The White Wolf:
- The White Wolf was only shown during the scene that was mentioned in the introduction. Its gender is unknown, and pretty much any other major things about this character. What is known is the fact that thanks to this wolf, Balto was able to realize that Boris's words of wisdom were right all along. This wolf is shrouded in mystery (mainly because it can appear and disappear at will, and also because it recognized Balto as well). It is also thought that the White Wolf is just a spiritual image of Balto's wolf heritage that he seems to have abandoned.

- Aniu is a crucial part of the Wolf Quest plot, mainly because she can communicate to other wolves (and wolf hybrids) through their dreams. It is also thought that she (yes, Aniu is a she) appears in the form of a raven and make other magical creatures appear out of nowhere. Later in the last scene of Wolf Quest, it is revealed to Balto that Aniu was his mother. It is thought by fans that she Whitemay be dead, but this is unknown.

These new characters seem to have many similarities, mainly with the whole magic/mysterious aura that they both have. However, they also are equally different. They're both white wolves, but the White Wolf has a higher air to it and Aniu looks more like the size of a maximum-sized wolf. Aniu also is more grayish-colored than the White Wolf in the original. The eyes are also different (possibly due to the animation style difference of the two films). Also Aniu has a voice (other than a howl), while the White Wolf does not. After naming these similarities and differences, it seems that this question could be answered either way.

The answer is up to you: the fans. Everyone has their own opinion to this question, so it's my guess that it should be left as so and everyone can go with their own answer. Is it possible to ever find out the real answer to the 'White Wolf vs. Aniu' mystery? Only time will tell . . .

Stay tuned . . . .

I think I have an explination of why Aniu and the White Wolf (they are the same, okay?) look different but are the same character. As you see in WQ, Aniu can shapeshift. I thought, maybe Aniu could also change her appearance as a wolf spirit. If that is true, the White Wolf could easily be Aniu in disguise.

They are the same, and those of you who don't think it, look again! They just look different because:
1. In the first movie, the wind is blowing, so her fur is all ruffled up. The second movie does not show wind blowing when she appears
2. Look at their eyes! They are pretty much the same
3. Aniu's fur color in B1 looks gray, but that's because there's not much light. In WQ, the fur is is white because there is light.

Other than that, they look the same and they are! (Though they are lazy animators!) lol

They are definatley the same wolf! No doubt about it! Although they just seemed to change the animation in the two movies. No big deal.

I'd say it's supposed to represent the same wolf although I think the animation wasn't too good in the second movie so perhaps that's why there are differences :)

Well, it might not be himself because how can he be in to places at once............but That probably will be Nava............just a guesse.......i am new there you have my guesse.........Nava's spirit appeared to to warn Balto......but he was too late.......and Nava has to be Balto's dad. Here's my theory:
So Nava and Anui were seperated.........they never new that they were brother and sister.......they fell in love and got married. then BANG.............Balto happened. ;) Still awesome theory!

I Say they are the same but you also have to think the colors of the backgrounds might have to do with there color diffrent animators cant do the same thing twice and youu also have to notice that other than being magical they have a lot of things in common picture this they are the same what do you see the same about them count how many things now count how many things are diffrent about them every single time i do this i find that things they have in common outnumber their diffrences....Great Article Though I Agree Everybody does have diffrent the way do you think they are the same or diffrent!!:P ;)

I think they are probably the same character, The White Wolf and Aniu, they're both important figures either way and The White Wolf was supposed to be more mysterious and inspiring in the first movie. I think that the re-draw in the 2nd (If that is the case) is just to make Aniu seem more.. relatable? I mean the White Wolf was an intimidating nearly godlike figure. I think they were just humanizing her in the 2nd.. :)

Actually the White Wolf didn't recognize Balto, it was aksing him who--or maybe what?--he was. That's probably why Balto turned away in shame, he couldn't answer.
This is prbably the best article I've read on this subject so far. Good work!

Very good article J17! Yes,they're both mysteries, but I do agree that the white wolf and aniu are different chars. They do have big differences and definetely appear at different times. In the firsty movie, the white wolf walked away. But Aniu(in Balto 2) vanished with the wind. Oddly different, yet alike. I really like how you were able to actually get out that The Mystery. I loved it!

Look they are both the same wolves!
It's just thet the lazy people who made Balto 2 and 3 were to lazy to draw the characters properly
And yes Aniu(the white wolf)is Balto's mother!

Okay I've been watching Balto sense it came out. I've seen all of them I've read the books okay, and ever sense I was a kid I knew that The white wolf isn't Aniu. IT'S MEANT TO BE BALTO'S MOTHER! when they colored Alue eyes that color because they want to to notice her more. THEY DON'T THINK THAT FAR INTO THAT STUFF!!! so there I found it out for you! Now please can you stop fighting about it.

I don't think these are the same wolves.
Just the way the
eye(s) are set, and the nose, and mouth, I don't think the first one
is Anui .

It's a good article, Juuchan! Well considered!

See, I believe they are the same. Certainly the identity of the
wolf in the first movie has not been established in any way, shape or
form. But as you said, that does not disprove that the wolf is Aniu
anymore than it does.

As Iditarod (above) said, Phil
Weinstein (the producer of the sequels) said that, as far as Universal
was officially concerned, Aniu and the white wolf are one and the
same. Concerning her other points, though, it's not unreasonable to
conclude that, just because someone from the team of the first Balto
movie said that the white wolf is supposed to represent Balto's wolf
heritage, it doesn't preclude the idea that Aniu's appearance to Balto
in the second movie is also a manifestation of that as well (through
his mother's spirit). And besides, since Universal is the copyright
owner even of the first Balto movie, any producer working on the
sequels can establish whatever fact they may about canon...even as
concerns the first movie! If one of them wants to say that the white
wolf is Aniu, it's a done deal.

As to the physical
differences (possible height or atmospheric issues, coloration, even
eyes, etc.), those simply come down, I think, to the different
interpretations seen in various characters by the different teams of
artists, animators and writers (and directors) between the first and
the second movies.

That's how I interpret that, anyway.

Say wut?
Well, we know (Phil Weinstein said it himself) that the White Wolf
from B1 and Aniu from WQ are supposed to be the same. But who says he
actually asked the makers of the original Balto? One of the makers of
B1 stated clearly that the White Wolf was intended to represent
Balto's wolf heritage. So, did they change their minds, or did
Weinstein forget to ask? We don't really know, but I hope that
helped. ;D

The only way they could be the same would be different animators
because the eyes are completely different. Also some people believe
that the white wolf is Balto's dad but that can't be true because his
dad has to be part dog if his mom is a wolf!!!!
