Alaska's REAL Hero : Togo?

Alaska's REAL Hero : Togo?

Did Togo deserve the fame? Did Balto take it from him?

Togo was THE greatest sled dog of his time.Togo was a  sire to many great dogs, and is belived to be one of the best sires of the breed. Almost all modern huskies can trace thier lines back to Togo. An agouti husky with blue eyes, Togo was owned by L.Seppla, and excellent musher and Husky breeder in his day. Togo was all but well behaved in his puppyhood. This little puppy even got in a fight with malamutes and escaped with a hurt ear.He was given away as a house pet , but Togo didn't last. He destroyed the house and was given back to Seppla. Togo was unexpected greatness,(a natural-born leader) despite his champion father and well bred mother. Togo constantly was escaping and trying to catch up with the dog teams Seppla took out.

He finnaly proved his greatness to Seppla and turned out to be the (by far) best lead dog Seppla ever bred/knew. Togo won the Alaskan Sweepstakes 3 times in a row and won just about every other race he ran in. He was a champion! Then came the cry for help in Nome. The Great Serum Run had begun! With Togo in the lead, Seppla raced his team of 'Seppla Siberian sled dogs' to the place where the serum was waiting. Then, the team quickly moved out. They dropped it off to the next musher in the relay. After a rest, they headed back for Nome. In the middle of the way, Togo and Seppla met with the current carrier of the medicine. They two mushers decided to have Seppla caarry on with the medicine, as his champion dogs were no match for the other's dogs.

Seppla proudly raced the serum to the next checkpoint, where that next musher brought it to Balto's musher, Gunnar Kassen. Kassen was Seppla's assistant, and had seen something special in Balto( who was assined to pull wieght, not race) and chose him for the lead dog. As soon as Balto's team got the serum, they were off! But the next checkpoint was dark, and the musher was asleep. So, Balto's team carried on, and into Nome, where it was 5:30 in the morning. Reporters and citizens were confused in the sudden rush of stardom of Balto, and mistook Togo's race record and fame for Balto's. Balto recived ALL the credit, while Togo actually did the most work. Balto had a good rest of his life, wallowing in fame and fourtune, while Togo got none.Togo was awarded an award in front of a small crowd, but that wasn't enough to top Balto's fame. Balto had a 20-muinite silent film made about him, called Balto's Race to Nome.

Togo's Body has been poorly preserved, as the second museum to aquire the mount let EVERY visitor pet the body! That eventually made the fur thin and fall out, and the dog's body looked like a starved and unhealthy husky. Then, finally, the mount's current owner saved Togo from unimmaginable damage and decay. His body is now preseved and displayed at the Itidorad Trail museum. Balto's Body is nothing less than perfeclty preserved ( except for his coat color, which has faded to a brown due to intense exposure of light) . You can see Balto's mount at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. An 8-muinite, continusly rolling, film shows news clips (silent) from Balto's big events.

Don't get me wrong, Balto was still a doggie hero from what I've learned! But the most suprising fact I have found out (from several reliable scources) is that Balto was NOT part wolf! The movie threw children's and adult's book authors off and helped create the "part wolf-part husky" rumor. I am NOT saying I dislike the movie, because it's one of my favorites!

Now thinking about it, I agree with other members that, in spite of all thier differences, ALL the dogs of the Great Serum Run were heroes in some way, and that they were just doing what they were told. I just think that Togo should have gotten recognized more, and that people should give him credit for what he acomplished! I still love Balto: don't be offended! I just want to put all I know and have learned about Togo here so that people can , in turn, learn about this wonderful husky!

TOGO: Togo

My late great Uncle Richard Evans actually owned Balto in Galena, Ak, a small town along the Yukon River. Leonard Seppala asked around for another dog so Richard sold it to him for 50 cents, not knowing that he'd pass the dog down to Gunnar Kaasen and become the famous Balto. I think all the dogs and the men steering them were Heros! Including my late Grandpa Charlie Evans and late Great Uncle Edgar Nollner. Richard never did get any credit for selling Balto to the Norwegian, Seppela. That's unfortunate, but life goes on.

There are two dogs that I have heard of in the serum run, Balto and Togo. First of all Togo should have gotten more fame, though I can see why reporters might think Balto was the real hero. Balto ran the last leg of the race, so everyone would consider him the hero. Think of it like this:

A few people you know win in a relay race. Who would you most likely congradulate, the last runner, who crossed the finnish line to win the race, or the third runner, who helped to win the race? That third runner might not seem as important to you, because it doesn't seem like they are the reason you won. But the third runner is very important, without them, you would have lost.

Second of all, I think I should have heard about almost every dog in the serum run, because they are all equally important. If any one of those dogs had been sick or injured, and not been able to run, it is possible that every child in Nome would have died.

Balto and Togo both accomplished amazing feats. We love them both and ALL the dogs who contributed to the Great Serum Run, including Blackie and Fritz. Togo ran the most miles including mushing over the frozen Bearing Straight only hours before shifting winds broke up the ice. In places Togo had to leap in the freezing water to get the sled to the next ice floe!! Balto ran the last leg in white out conditions smelling the trail the whole way in blizzard conditions!! Dog and animal lovers will forever remember both Balto and Togo and all the dogs who helped in the Great Serum run to save the residents Nome!!

wow, calm down darkwolf 1214!! take it easy, balto's girl was just trying to make a point and i agree. I think togo should have gotton more fame than he did but who knows, maybe seppala gave togo a little somthing that wasn't recorded. maybe nothing big but extra food or lots of cuddles.....lol And keep in mind that i'm sure none of the dogs noticed which one was getting more fame. but anyway ALL the dogs that ran in the serum run are heros, and none is better than the other.

I agree that Togo should have gotten more credit, but Balto got more famous because they didn't pass the medicine on to the next guy, and they were the ones who arrived at Nome, so that's why he is more famous. Nice article, though. I still have grown to love Balto more ( because of the movie(s)).

I would first like to say, amazing article. The only way I could discribe the "Fame Issue" is comparing it to "American Idol". Say you have two people from the same small town. One of them is eliminated and gets 6th place (Togo) while the other makes the Top 2 (Balto). The one still in the Top 2 comes back to the town and does the concert thing an has something deticated to them. They become the most famous contestant because they bring the town the most recognition. That doesn't mean the other person is completely forgotten, just not as famous. Same thing with Balto and Togo. Both are amazing dogs, it's just that one was recognized more than the other. That's how I view the subject.

im not saying that Balto diddnt do any thing but i would at least show some respect for Togo because Balto got the fame and fortune but Togo got nothing except a little crowd:cry: i wish Togo got more respect like Balto. I wish they made him get a movie about to in Balto 4 if they make one where Togo shows up and Balto and Togo become best friends and join the gang Boris,Balto,Muck and Luck, Kodi, and Jenna i would love that movie!!!!!!! alot:allears:

I agree completely with Togo being the REAL hero. Togo ran about,
what? 1200 miles? HE was the one who brought the medicine most of the
way. But then he had to rest otherwise he wouldn't make it, so Balto,
being rested up, went the rest of the way. He saved NO ONE and did
hardly any of the work. Togo ran through 50 below weather. They BOTH
went through tough weather, not just Balto. It wasn't a pleasure for
Togo nor Balto. The owner of the Balto was so upset, he just sold the
dog because he didn't want him anymore; he wasn't even a good lead dog
and kept Togo. Another musher took Balto and the original owner didn't
care: He wanted Togo because he was much better and couldn't have two
lead dogs. Balto deserves a little credit, but Togo deserves much
more. He was even requested to be stuffed by the owner but he didn't
care what happened with Balto.

Togo was very heroic,I agree. He did the most treacherous part of The
Great Serum Run,but Balto was remembered most just because he went to
Nome. But,Balto is great. Balto and Togo, along with the rest
of the dogs deserve as much credit as Balto got. Even Fox,Balto's lead
dog partner was forgotten. Great article!

I totally agree with everyone is some ways... all of the dogs were
heores... but the leaders togo and balto went through the most...
being a leader requires a lot more then just being a sled dog... togo
should have a monument in central park, new york city just like balto
does... i love em both... can anyone give me a really good site with a
lot of photos and information on the journey and the dogs lives?

Oh I disagree, Pippy. Not only Nome's, but ALSO Alaska's AND far
beyond that. You really think that Togo's (or Balto's) popularity are
limited to just Nome?
