Box Office News - Big Hero 6

The box offices are buzzing lately, especially with the release of Big Hero 6, which so far has brought in a whopping $36 million just last weekend, and over $100 million in just the second week of its showing. World-wide, the movie has grossed $148 million.

The film is based off of the original Marvel Comics issues. Big Hero 6 was originally supposed to be introduced in December of 1988 in the issue Alpha Flight #17, but instead starred in its own comic in September of the same year. The comic tell the story of a group of super heros recruited by the [...]

Disney comics back in the USA!

Can you believe it?

Even though Disney bought Marvel a few years back, they also stopped publishing any Disney comic in the whole USA for years! (more precisely, since Boom! Studios cancelled their Disney comics)

This always made me quite angry at Disney : buying the biggest comics company and not doing ANYTHING with their own properties...

Comics

But now, with the efforts of the team behind the Darkwing Duck comics ("The Duck Knight returns") in 2010, and a whole new publisher : "Joe's Comics", a new batch of Disney comics will be released! And they're quite varied!

All these [...]

Why the ads!

If you aren't using an ad blocker, you've surely noticed it by now : I am putting back ads on the site.
Wait! There's a good reason for this.

To put it simply, I am soon going to leave my current job, and I will be creating my own micro-company. (more on that later)
This means that I will have more time to dedicate to the site, so I'll be able to do much more than currently!
For example, I could add support for more languages, create a new and improved interface, correct all the remaining bugs etc... All the things I wanted to do but never could, because of time constraints.

There's barely enough to cover here, so this should be short. First of all, Box Office Mojo announced release dates for several new Fox animated films. Several sequels have been announced, but the soonest releases are all original films: Underdogs in early 2015, Boss Baby in 2016, Captain Underpants in 2017, and Larrakins in 2018. The sequels to be released are The Croods 2 in 2017, Madagascar 4 in 2018, and Puss in Boots 2: 9 Lives and 40 Thieves in late 2018. Remember, these release dates are tentative and may change.

For now, Puss in Boots 2 is the farthest-out movie with a [...]

The

After a month of no updates, we finally have stuff to talk about. This weekend, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return arrived in about 2,500 theaters in North America. Unfortunately, it only gathered about $3.7 million over the weekend. For a release that wide, it's among the worst openings ever. In fact, it's the 7th-worst for any film that opened over 2,500 theaters. At this point, this film will be lucky to end its run over $10 million, which would make it an all-out box office flop against a budget of $70 million. (The 15% rating on RottenTomatoes.com doesn't help.)

In contrast, Rio 2 [...]

Rio 2 was released in American theaters this weekend and managed to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Friday. But it was not to last, and ultimately, it ended the weekend about $2 million short of 1st Place. Altogether, it managed a solid $39 million from its opening weekend. That's almost identical to its predecessor, which racked up $39.2 million. Considering it had solid competition this itme around, that makes its intake even more impressive. Combined with a foreign total of $125 million, Rio 2 has now earned $164.2 million worldwide. This means it's on track to easily pass [...]

This will probably be the last news of this sort until Rio 2 releases, since animated films are not doing so good at the North American box office right now. So we'll be taking a 2-week break from this coming up here.

Million

The highest-grossing animated film was Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which took in a respectable $9.5 million this weekend and placing 4th, behind holdovers Muppets Most Wanted and Divergent, and trailing behind 1st-place newcomer Noah. Given the competition, that's not too bad. To date, Mr. Peabdoy and Sherman has earned just shy of $95 million at the US box office and $197 [...]

After spending a weekend at the top of the box office, Mr. Peabody and Sherman plummetted to 3rd Place, behind newcomers Divergent and Muppets Most Wanted. It took in about $11.7 million, which puts its total domestic gross to $81 million domestically and $183 million worldwide. That's not too bad at all, and it looks likely to close at over $100 million domestically/$250 million worldwide.

The Lego Movie also took a big hit from the new releases, as well as strong holdovers. After spending last weekend in the Top 5, it barely was able to stay in 9th Place, and earned just over $4 [...]
