I am wondering about Mad Dog. How did the idea of the character come about and how was his voice actor chosen? Also, what kind of animal is he? It seems to be popular for the fans to declare him a ferret, but that never much sense to me. (After all, his name is Mad *Dog*.)

(I also admittedly wonder how he and Dumptruck were switched back to normal after the end of that episode where the idol changes everyone's personalities, but I suppose that's cartoon logic that can never really be explained, haha.)

Okay, let me answer the BIG question that I always get asked. No, Don Karnage is not a fox. He is a wolf. All the air pirates are wolves (or at least were supposed to be - some look like dogs). Like the Nazi subs in the Atlantic called "The Wolf Pack." Karnage & his men are group predators - like wolves.

So Mad Dog is a wolf - though a whiny wolf. I think he was played by Hamilton Camp, right? A funny guy.

How did we create him? Well, in every gang there's the leader, the big dumb guy (Dumptruck), the mumbler (Gibber), and like that. Mad Dog was simply the weasly gang member.

I doubt we got the name from Back to the Future III (tho' that is a great film). I have a gag file that I've been keeping for years, and I had a list of "gang member" names that I probably pulled from. And I think Dumptruck and Mad Dog came from my college roommate who once attended Waynesburg College which had a football team - and those two were two of the team players' nicknames!

As for cartoon logic.... after an episode ends, pretty much everything goes back to square one again.

I agree that it's hard to see Hal being anything but a cat...I think MOST of them are wolves, but there are some exceptions like him.

With all due respect to Jymn, I think he overgeneralized with "they're all wolves." Hal is most definitely feline, and Dumptruck is supposed to be a Great Dane (hence the Danish accent.)

All but one pirate was a wolf, then. Kit was a pirate but he was a bear, the ONLY bear. And Hal looks more like an overweight yellow tan cat than a wolf, are you certain HE'S a wolf?

I believe Mad Dog was voiced by Charlie Adler. I like Hamilton Camp too, because he provided the voice for one of my favorite characters - Gizmo Duck/Fenton Crackshell.

Mad "Dog" from TaleSpin,probably got his name from the Back to the Future three character "Mad Dog" Tannen,but that's just my opinion.
