This past year has been one of the largest in animation history, wielding a total of 14 films commercially released in English-speaking countries. Of these, 9 were sequels, continuations, re-releases, or otherwise Smurfy. Three were traditionally-animated, two were entirely motion-capture, and four ended up in the Top 10 Grossing Films of the year.
Let's take a look at the films released this past year, in release order. Beginning with Gnomeo and Juliet, which was released in America on February 11. It opened at the #3 spot its opening weekend, grossing [...]
This piece of news came about in an obscure way. The previously-announced Pixar film involving dinosaurs has had its release date replaced with, you guessed it, The Snow Queen. However, there's a new piece of information emerging: The film is now entitled Frozen.
This practice of changing movie names is not new to Disney; before Tangled was released, it was advertised and produced under the name Rapunzel. The idea behind this is to make it clear that these films are aimed more toward families and both genders, rather than kids--specifically, little girls.
This film [...]
To celebrate the Christmas season, Animation Source has begun to snow! (Yes, snow!)
The "snow" season is forecast to last up through the end of December, into January, at least! If this turns out to slow your computer down too much, you can easily make it stop snowing by pressing the "Stop Snow" button at the top of any Source page. To start it again, press the same button, which will now say "Star Snow".
Snow has been a tradition on Animation Source for several years. Have fun watching it snow![...]
Today marks the final key date of the 1st Annual Animation Source Choice Awards before voting begins. Today I have gone over the animated films that were released in 2011, and prepared it to be released on January 1. I handed it off to Conay, host of the official ASCA website. With this, there's exactly one month before the ASCAs officially begin!
To help commemorate this event, I have prepared a video to help promote the awards show, while hopefully helping you, the members of Animation Source, gain a better understanding of what the ASCAs are all about.
Hope you enjoy the [...]
Sourcecast has a special treat for you. While we try to regroup for our next episode, the official website has been updated with a Christmas theme! And to make it even more special, we're hosting a weekly update featuring selections from Animation Source, from all the Sources! To view these, go to the website and click the wreath in the middle.
On top of that, several members of Animation Source are working to bring you "presents" for Christmas! What are these presents? Well, you'll just have to keep checking back at the Sourcecast website to know! Keep checking [...]
It's been months in the making, but now we are pleased to announce the official opening of How to Train Your Dragon Source!
The site was started by Cemi over a year ago. Since she left, it was finished up by MightyBalto1925, Skulblaka_Shur'tugal, and Animalia! Come on and check it all out!
Just a treat from our partner, here are some Halloween-themed comic pages featuring some cameos from Jaq and Ratigan!
PS : Yeah, I should have posted it yesterday, sorry ^^'[...]
The time has come for the first big event of the Animation Source Choice Awards to go underway! Today I announce to you...(drumroll, please?)...the official rules for the 1st Annual Animation Source Choice Awards!
The rules are fairly simple, detailing what films are eligible for which categories, and how voting will take place. You can read it all yourself, but I will give you the overview this way:
Box Office Mojo today posted the latest edition of their release dates for upcoming films. Some films now have new release dates, some films have been shelved, and some films have been revealed. Care to take a guess at the surprises in store?
As this article will tell, some pretty interesting upcoming releases in animation have been revealed. The first thing that catches one's attention would be the release of four Disney classics in 3D. This is likely to follow the trend that The Lion King created when it was released earlier last month.
As was announced a few years ago, [...]
Here is the grand opening of a site dedicated to Walt Disney's last film, The Jungle Book!
It's rather short-notice, but Season 2 of Sourcecast officially premieres this Saturday, October 8, at 6 PM GMT/1 PM Eastern/Noon Central!
Not only that, but this show will be LIVE! It will be the first live show of Sourcecast, and with hosts Aniu Caelestis, Rusty the Fox, and Skulblaka_Shur'tugal bound to be there, this is one show you will not want to miss!
What will we discuss? Among other things, we'll talk about the new Fox and the Hound Source, the upcoming Animation Source Choice Awards, and review new films and series like The Smurfs and Season 2 of My [...]
As this weekend at the box office proved, The Lion King still has the magic, even after seventeen years. The film was re-released in 3D, and topped the domestic box office. Early estimates placed the film as having grossed at least $29,300,000 by the end of its beginning weekend, making The Lion King now the seventeenth highest-grossing film in the US, and the 28th highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.
This weekend marked the first time since the re-release of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi that a re-released film has grossed the most [...]
UPDATE: THE TRAILER IS NOW AVAILABLE!
If you grew up in the '90s or somewhere near there, Pokemon was part of your life. In its history, it has broken several records: its games are the second-best selling series of all time, after the Mario series. The Pokemon Trading Card Game has sold the most number of trading cards ever, beating out other games like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering. The comic books and manga are among the highest-selling of the kid-friendly category. And arguably most importantly, its animated series is the longest-lasting anime of all time.
Today I announce a partnership between Animation Source and an online comic, "Keeping Up With Thursday"!
The reason I chose to do it is because it's a comic that will probably interest a lot of the fans on Animation Source. But let's hear it from the author himself :
KUWT is sorta like an amalgram of Disney's Great Mouse Detective and An American Tail; 'if Don Bluth stuck around with Disney for one more feature', I suppose I could call it. The core audience is people who like those cartoons, but another part of it are those looking [...]
I am pleased to announce to you something that has been in the works for the better part of this past year. Due to the failure of the Animation Source Awards (which will be held again this coming up year), I began thinking of what else Animation Source could do that would involve every member, and keep up with the tradition of voting for your favorite. Well, here’s what I’ve come up with: the ANIMATION SOURCE CHOICE AWARDS.
^Animation Source Choice Awards banner, courtesy of TwistedFate^
To start off, this is absolutely nothing like the ASA’s. You could view [...]
The summer holidays are almost over (for some of you, they ARE over), but that doesn't mean that animated films are coming to a halt. In fact, some might say that the best films of 2011 are yet to come!
First of all, the news that I think a lot of you will find the most interesting: on September 16, for a limited 2-week run, Disney is re-releasing The Lion King in theaters, in 3D! This means that you'll be able to not only see it on the big screen, but with new 3D technology. While opinions on this range from terrific to negative (one newspaper called it "Disney's [...]
As announced previously by a news, I'm changing the staff on Animation Source to a smaller, easier to manage and more neutral one.
But first, I want everyone to know that I have updated the rules to reflect my current sensibility on the problems that occured on the site these years.
I have made rules less « strict » and more leaning on common sense.
I think it's important that EVERYONE listens to MY « RULES » on the sites. There's been so many people making their own rules and spreading them, even visitors, that it's caused the [...]
Aside from a big-budget movie making big bucks this week end (aka the last part of Harry Potter, taking in the best grossing weekend ever for a film), there was a small and simple movie which doesn't play in the same league : Winnie The Pooh.
This charming film is an attempt from Disney to revitalize this franchise (after the failed attempts at making CGI Winnie, Disney didn't want to lose one of the best selling franchise when it comes to merchandise), and the image of the company at the same time, by making it a 2D movie just like the original film. It was made by high [...]
It's been over a month in the making, but now Sourcecast's interview with Phil Weinstein is available for transcript download! To download it, click this link. And you can also check out Sourcecast's other transcribed episodes on this forum topic.
I'm going to try and get a French member to post this on the French side as well, so they can enjoy this just as much as we did![...]
Sourcecast Episode 10 has OFFICIALLY been released. Skul's on his own, thus constituting a mini-sode, but his range of topics include new and upcoming Sources (he has a list), to a review of Cars 2 and Winnie the Pooh.

The recent events (conflicts between the french and english staff, especially), and a long and growing history of visitors complaining about moderators "making their own rules" and "greedy for power", have convinced me that it was time to make serious changes to the Animation Source staff.
The staff has expanded so much over the years, new mods have been hired by site admins in charge, which ultimately makes me unable to know who in the current staff was doing their job correctly or not. It's no secret that some mods have applied rules in strange ways, banning [...]
Hello users of animation source, for those of you who complained of the O&CS layout, look, banner, everything, your complaints have been heard!
Aaeron DiNoze, AKA Kay the Zombie, has redone it! In ONE day!
Click the picture to be taken to Oliver and Company Source, or click here
Being a Journalist has its ups and downs. One of my ups this past week was one that caught me completely off-guard: I was given the opportunity to see advanced showings of Cars 2 and Winnie the Pooh.
You wonder how I managed to see these films early? I will say no more except that I have connections. At any rate, here are my reviews (spoiler-free) of both films.
Starting out with Cars 2. The film comes out in America this Friday, being released as Pixar's 11th animated film, and its first non-Toy Story sequel. The movie follows Lightning McQueen and Mater in a race around [...]
Cats Don't Dance Source is now open, since today!
If the above banner doesn't work, just click here.
Amazing graphics were done by Aaeron DiNozo.
The information was done by our lovely admin Achoo!
It's an amazing movie, and a classic. Make sure to come check us out and watch the movie![...]
This Fan News is mainly for those who haven't seen the updates or important comments that I've post.
So, here's the first update (June 06,2011):
Firstly, all of Animation Source's sites are now re-opened. For the moment, you can all continue to tchat and do your stuff on the sites. On another hand, note that your fanworks won't get activated until everything is proven to be safe - The mod panel is currently closed. *(June 08, 2011)* The mod panel is now re-opened. Your fanworks will now be able to get validated.
Secondly, I have the [...]
Sorry for the alarming and dramatic title, but I think all of the persons here has the right to know what's going on. Animation Source got entirely hacked, yesterday night.
The troll hacked a lot of moderator/administrator accounts to spam and to give permissions to his double-accounts and thus, made himself an easy way to take control and destroy the sites. I decided to demod every single staff member on the AS sites to avoid their powers to be misused. .
Then the hacker striked back and started to delete a bunch of accounts - including some staff [...]
Animation Source was hacked last night and GreyWolf has deactivated the Sources to keep them safe.
She was meant to be making a News to let everyone know but I don't know where she went so I'm making one in hopes it'll calm things down.
Just sit tight and chat on AS itself and the forums until Steet & Grey can restore everything. c:
Animation Source is constantly trying to find new movies to make into Sources, and now it announces its very first CGI-film: Rio Source! What's most remarkable about this is that it was created in a single week by Aaeron DiNozo!
Rio is currently in theaters, so if you haven't seen it yet, please go and do so! It's a terrific film, and you're really missing out if you don't get the chance to see it! And be sure to check out this terrific Source![...]
Sourcecast's interview with Phil Weinstein was conducted on Sunday, May 15, and is now available for your listening pleasure. Click the banner to go to the page where you can listen to the interview.
Have we got exciting news for you! On May 15, Sourcecast is going to have an interview with Phil Weinstein, the man who directed the two Balto sequels! Mr. Weinstein has had a lot of other experience in animated films, including The Lion King II, Hop, and many others! He's also worked in television; he won an Emmy Award for his work in Boo to You Too, Winnie the Pooh, and nominated for another one for his work in Hellboy: Sword in Storms.
If you have any questions that you want for Sourcecast to ask Mr. Weinstein, either reply to this news post, or send them to [...]
Well, it's been several long months, filled with little more than commercials and interviews, but after a LONG hiatus, Sourcecast is back!
And this episode is EXTREMELY important, because for the first time since Episode 5, all the Sourcecasters are present at the same time! Well...okay, not at the EXACT same time, but hey, we're all in the same episode! That's a first in over 6 months.
In Sourcecast Episode 9: Attack of the Procrastins, we discuss several things related to Animation, including the opening of four new Sources, a discussion of "Pokemon: [...]
We've recently started a petition for getting TaleSpin comics released!
With the recent success of the Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers and Ducktales comics, TaleSpin deserved to have a monthly comics series as well - but it unfortunately won't happen at Boom Studios (the current publisher who had the rights), as they officially declined to be able to get the licence from Disney, even though they were interested.
But now, the rights are moving back to Disney/Marvel, and this becomes a possibility again!
With a little [...]
This kind of things doesn't happen often, but it's always an honor to be contacted directly by a company!
I've recently been contacted by a company who works with Jeffrey Varab.
Jeffrey is one of the main animators of Balto, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Titan AE and has worked on many others, including Lady & The Tramp, Mulan, Brother Bear, The Fox and the Hound (notice how many have become Source sites here!!!)
They wish to let you know that Jeffrey has started a site on which he gives tutorials on "how to draw like the pros".
Hello, and thank you [...]

UPDATE : Considering many of you didn't like "Yopala Boom", I reverted it back. So it looks like we'll stick to old-fashioned "Animation Source", then!
I thought about this since quite a long time, but I finally decided myself.
I have noticed that most sites that have become popular over the years, have simple, catchy names. Take Google, Yahoo or Twitter for example!
So, Animation Source becomes Yopala Boom!
I will soon redirect the site to www.yopalaboom.com, which thankfully has not been reserved by anyone yet.
Also, as [...]
EDIT: EXTREMELY LATE APRIL FOOL'S! Courtesy to Aaeron DiNozo for making the cover!
I didn't believe this until I did further research, but I am pleased--and excited--to announce that Disney Animation has green-lit a brand-new movie: Eragon!
<--Teaser poster for Eragon, which draws similarites to the original book cover.
Eragon was previously made into a film in 2006, but drew poor critical reception. Despite this, it was the 16th highest-grossing film of the year. However, many moviegoers--fans of the book and otherwise--were disappointed with [...]
Let's get started! First of all, there has been a LOT of updates for Sourcecast. When last we left our beloved podcast, Episode 8 had just been posted on Youtube. I am now happy to say that Episode 8 has been uploaded to Mypodcast, our hosting site, and can be downloaded on iTunes. Not only that, but a new feature has been added to Sourcecast: The Skultacular Special!
Skultacular Specials are the new "interview" part of our podcast, as in the past it has been proven that getting several people together for a Skype call is tedious at best. So far, [...]

We've been informed that All Dogs Go To Heaven 1 & 2, Anastasia and Secret of NIMH will all be coming up on Bluray, on March 29th!
This is kind of a shocking news to me, as I really didn't expect any company besides Disney to release any of their traditional features on Blu-ray anytime soon. I'm glad to be proven wrong! If these do well, maybe there's hope for Universal releasing Balto and both An American Tail on Blu-ray too?
Here are the covers, which I admit are very attractive (even though a bit inappropriate in NIMH's case) :
The price for each [...]
Recently, there have been a lot of questions asked in the "Ask Questions" section of the Animation Source hub, regarding future Sources. It has been stated numerous times that there is a forum topic concerning this, which can be found here.
That being said, any questions asked in the future regarding Sources asked on the Animation Source hub will be deleted with VERY few exceptions. Hopefully there will be a list of future Sources available soon, but until then, if you want to know what Sources are in the works, refer to that forum thread I posted above.
Hey, I said you should expect to see a batch of new sites opening, didn't I? ;)
So, here is the long-awaited Oliver & Company Source, dedicated to the 1988 Disney film! This is one of the most overlooked creation in Disney's animated films catalog, yet I always felt it was a simple but very enjoyable one. And I know it has a lot of fans!
MightyBalto1925 made the (beautiful) graphics, and Moki Hunter did the information side.
For now I'll be the site admin of the site, but don't worry : I'll soon spend some time on looking for appropriate site admins [...]
Hello dear visitors,
I´d like to introduce myself as our new site admin/site builder (info). Some of you may know me and for the others, I can say that I´m a really friendly person and do not bite so if you have any questions don´t hesitate to PM me.
So I´m totally new to this job and need to figure out how to manage all this but when I did you can expect a complete site update. New movie info will be added soon, the characters will get more complete descriptions, etc.
I might not be perfect but I´ll try my best on here. So if you spy anything like [...]

A note from Conay:
Thanks to everyone who watched the show, it was a great success. Apologies to anyone who missed it; because, due to a technical hitch, you won't be able to listen to the show again.
The results for the ASA's will be confirmed in a week's time, as there are many modifications needing to be made. Thanks for your support.
The nominations are now finally over, and we are currently (in the words of Toby Turner)
tabulating your untabulateable nominations. The ASA nomination results will be broadcast
LIVE at Livestream.com, on Tuesday 8th February 2011, 10:00PM GMT(UTC)/5:00PM
EST/9:00AM Sydney and should last approximately 30 minutes.
The nominees for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards have been announced. While there aren't many surprises, animated films certainly take up a good portion of nominated films.
The easiest film on the list to recognize is Toy Story 3, which has received a total of 5 Oscar nominations--tied for the second-most in animated history. The five it has been nominated for are: BEST PICTURE, BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY, BEST ANIMATED FEATURE, BEST ORIGINAL SONG ("We Belong Together"), and BEST SOUND EDITING.
Also on the list is How to Train Your Dragon, with 2 [...]
After a long hiatus, the Sourcecasters are back! Well, two of them... It's been so long since Episode 7 was recorded, me (Skulblaka_Shur'tugal) and Swords of the Wolves decided to make an episode and get it up just to say we could. So here it is: Sourcecast Episode 8: We Are Men!
In this episode, we discuss several things, including the Animation Source Awards, Mulan Source, and the upcoming Annie Awards. Due to complications with the regular podcast host, the episode has been uploaded to YouTube, so click on that video above, and start listening!
It's been a long while since I've been working on that, but it's finally here!
Lately, there have been many issues surrounding the moderation of fan creations, and in particular the fan characters : too many characters to validate, long waits for validations,... But the biggest source of problems, is that each person has different opinions on what SHOULD or SHOULDN'T be accepted in this section. And this leads to conflicts between the members and the mods, and none would really know what rules to follow.
Well here is my solution. No more characters deactivated! [...]
A message from Conay:
