Those Darn Puppy Names - THE ORIGINAL ONES!

The name change and the possible reasons why they were done...

Juuchan17 :

At the conclusion of the original "Lady and the Tramp," Lady and Tramp were blessed with four pups - three that looked like their mother and one that was very much like his father. However, it left us with many unanswered questions.... Were they male or female? What were their names, if they had any?

Naturally, everyone knows that Tramp's little clone is Scamp, the star of the film's sequel and of many other Disney-related materials, such as storybooks, comics and more. But for the other three, they have either been known as "the other puppies" or for those that have only seen the sequel, they've been known as Scamp's three prissy and neat sisters, Annette, Collette, and Danielle (which also were not named in the film, only mentioned in the credits and the "Making of" documentary on the DVD).

Strange.... those aren't the original names for Scamp's siblings at all. Originally, he had three siblings named Ruffy, Fluffy and Scooter. Their personalities were basically like usual pups. Then again, according to Comic Vine, Scooter was a male in the "Scamp" comic strips, though in the "Scamp" comic books that were released, Scooter was female, just like his sisters, Fluffy and Ruffy. So at times, the sequel does prove to be true, making Scamp have three sisters.

So, why was there a name change? It's not officially known why, but I have a few ideas. Perhaps the writers didn't know the original names of the puppies, despite using a lot of rare materials from the original to recreate the same atmosphere. Maybe they thought Ruffy, Fluffy and Scooter sounded too childish for older puppies, as they seemed to turn out by the timing of things in "Scamp's Adventure" (It did take place in July, over six months since the ending of the first film, which was close to Christmastime.). However, the obvious reason is probably because having only one different sibling, in both looks and gender, made it easier for Scamp to have a reason to want to escape. That and the obvious prim and proper idea seemed perfect for "Lady-clone" triplets.

Dovestar, easy. I think you're overreacting to what Juuchan created here.

You guys! °x° Seriously. They are not, first of all, "Lady-Clones". They are, in fact, different from one another--and not just by the color of their collars. If you look closely, Collette (red collar, you simpletons ;) ) has longer, flowing chocolate-brown ears. Annette (blue collar) has short, up-to-her-chin caramel-brown ears, smooth and groomed. And Danielle (white collar) is the rambunctious one. She has a sprig of hair (or fur) that just doesn't want to be flattened at the back of her head. Her ears, though short like Annette's, are not groomed and are--in fact--quite rumpled and stick-out positioned, in a way.

They changed the names because the movie had little or nothing to do with the comics. Ruffy, Fluffy, and Scooter are not appropriate names for any dogs, especially gorgeous female cocker-spaniel pups. That is, in reality, what they are. please stop treating professional movie-makers like they've got no brains. I, for one, am completely satisfied with the way the movie turned out, and although names for the girls were not mentioned via the movie, if you are a true fan, (or just plain curious, lol) you will be sure to check the credits for the names, or research it. Nevertheless, I applaud this article, becuase, amongst other things, you seem to have the writer's gift. ;) I would know.

Well, I'm not sure about that. I know that Disney made Donald Duck comics and had other characters with their own comics... Whether they're considered canon or not is anyone's guess.

In my opinion, the print works are probably too little-known in order to be called canon by many fans of the films and animation. All I do know is that the "Scamp" series did flesh him out in a cuter way as a little curious pup than "Scamp's Adventure" did while he was a maturing rebel. But that's just me. XD

The question is, ARE the print materials considered to be canon? Has Disney made that clear? Or the original author of the short story?

Thanks so much! It was difficult to find information not from any Wiki-site that mentioned their original names in more detail; most of them were mainly focused on the sequel names. To be honest, I just learned about the Scooter gender mix-up while I finished up the article yesterday!

I might do a future article on the actual print comic of the "Scamp" series, since it is so little-known in the Lady and the Tramp canon.

A very well-written and researched little article, Juuchan! My compliments! I must admit, I didn't know about the print stuff...
