Critics say Ice Age 5 is a cold disaster

Written by Karlamon :

Ice Age 5: Collision Course has progressively made it’s way around the world in theatres and has finally arrived in North American cinemas. Reception-wise however, things are not looking good for the fifth instalment… In fact, like the meteor in the movie, it’s pretty disastrous when you think about it.

The

While the previous sequels have received mixed reactions from critics, the fifth movie set a new low for the ageing franchise where most critics and even Ice Age fans disliked the movie. At time of writing, Ice Age 5 has toxic scores of 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and 34 on Metacritic, a reception that can be said to be worse than something like Alpha and Omega. The film has been lambasted for it’s obnoxious comedy, broken story with too many subplots, an excessive cast of annoying characters old and new, and superb animation that is wasted a lousy Ice Age sequel.

Box office results took the toll with the negative reviews and competition with Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets. Opening in fifth place behind Pets, Ice Age 5 ended up bombing with the lowest domestic opening weekend of the franchise. With $21.4 million, this was only half of what was earned in Ice Age 3’s $41.7 million opening weekend. Outside of North America where the franchise is strong and popular, things have been brighter with $212 million (83.3% of the total box office) at time of writing. The movie’s co-director Mike Thurmeier hopes the international box office will help compensate the poor domestic run.

Whether or not Ice Age 5 will make enough money overseas to warrant a sixth movie, that is something we’ll have to wait and see on. But the thing we’re guaranteed is that the movie’s terrible reception will put a huge dent in Blue Sky’s reputation. We do hope that the upcoming Ferdinand and Anubis will help redeem the studio after this mess.

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Generally-speaking, professional critics are idiots. They are schooled, during their college education, to be pointed, to raise peoples' ire and hackles, and get them talking (or to be political, if you can believe that). or they will support or condemn movies for reasons that make no sense in the real world.

However, it can be justifiably said that this particular franchise was milked beyond its own sustainability. They should have stopped after the third one, which wasn't bad at all (in fact, it was pretty cool). The second one was just inane and stupid. The first one, of course, was pretty funny and charming...it was a nice buddy/adventure movie, without all of the thinly-veiled social issues commentary and engineering which Hollywood seems to love to throw into CHILDREN'S cartoons (movies most especially). Which is despicable. And no matter how you slice it, animated movies (but for what you generally see on "Adult Swim" on Cartoon Network, or in anime) are designed for KIDS.

But by the fourth and, now, this one, the jokes, the character interplay, and the whole Scrat-causing-another-disaster thing has gone beyond even beating the proverbial dead horse. As far as I am concerned, they never should have gone beyond the third movie.

I honestly don't blame Blue Sky for making this movie. I blame Fox for making this movie. Because executives at Fox wanted to make a few hundred million dollars on this film and made Blue Sky make this film. I bet even the animators are bored and didn't want to make this movie but Fox forced them to.

Go for it! If you are a Peanuts fan, this movie will trigger your tears of joy factory. :P If you aren't, this film is still quite enjoyable and might even convert you to a Peanuts fan! :)

Really? I haven't seen it yet (and wasn't planing to, in fact). To me, Ice age 1, Ice Age 3 and Rio 2 were their best movies ^-^ But by curiousity I'll perhaps try the Peanuts movie =p

A great example of Blue Sky's ability to create great films would arguably have to be The Peanuts Movie. (Which is their highest rated film by far)

I completely agree with you Gretsh1962. Blue sky has a real potential to make great movies, the first movies of Ice Age are great, and the universe is strong enough to make real great stories. They shouldn't have change the movie directors =/

Sometimes I wonder if Blue Sky is aware of the diminishing quality of the Ice Age series. They should at least try putting some effort to improve it. A role model they could look up to is DreamWork's Madagascar franchise. If you take a look at their ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, their ratings improved as each installment was made. DreamWorks probably learned their lesson from Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After (which killed the successful streak of the Shrek franchise) and decided that installments to their films needed much more attention and precision.

Blue Sky has a very talented crew of artists and animators, they just need to utilize their talents for movies under the care of a very good story team.

It's a shame really, I was hoping there would be expansion on Diego and Shira's relationship

As an aspiring animator, I just feel sorry for the animators putting a lot of their effort in this failing franchise.
