Blue-eyed Malamute

Proof that Steele does NOT have to be half Husky to have blue eyes.

Rylie :

I found this picture of a pure Alaskan Malamute (the information said so), and it does, in fact, have BLUE eyes. A lot of people think that Steele can't be a purebred Mal because of his eyes, and this proves that that's not true. I knew that he couldn't be half Husky because...

1) Why would the animators bother to do that?

2) He's way too big.

Ok, sorry to tell you all that think the dog in the photo is a Malamute but ODAS is 100% correct, the ears are wrong shaped, in teh wrong place, face shape is not right and the eye shape is wrong for a malamute. so even if the dog in the photo had brown or black eyes it still would NOT look like a Malamute.

And to let you all know on here that think the malamute can have blue eyes.... IT CAN'T, The Malamute (pure malamute) does not carry the gene for a BLUE EYE. If it doesn't carry the gene, it can't pass it on, so no pure breed malamutes born will have the gene, and if the new pups don't have the gene they can't have blues eyes or pass it on to their pups can they.
A study that tested 100 purebred malamutes DID NOT find the gene for blue eyes in any of the tests.
All supposed BLUE EYE mals tested (58 so far), DNA show that the dogs are in fact cross breeds.

and to GHOSTWOLF17 - I think you wrote malamute on your comment and should of wrote HUSKY, the husky is the smaller breed of the 2. Husky=23-25 inches at shoulders, Malamute 25-28 inches at shoulders. These are approximates of couse, I have a Malamute that is 31 inches at shoulders.

You people have seen malamutes in books and on videos. I have been helping the geneticist doing the testing handling the dogs. Testing isn't finished yet so no published article but I hope this helps to here a response supported buy scientific results.

Steele2 is right in one respect...the AKC's standard (and the overriding view and often hardcore and snooty mindset) of malamute breeders does not PRECLUDE the existence of blue eyes in the breed. It is simply considered a fault because they don't officially recognize it.

Breed clubs and breed standards are horrid things folks. There was a time when "harlequin"-patterned Great Dane puppies were actually euthanized simply because the breeders didn't want that marking style spreading through the lines. And then you have tail dockings, ear cutting, and who knows what else.

Actually, yes, there is. It's considered a fault by the AKC if an Alaskan Malamute has blue eyes.

As for the Chow Chow, well, I couldn't find much about the toung. Other than simply the coloration is more pigment in the toung.

Chow Chows HAVE to have purple tounges same as Malamutes(and about 90% of other breeds) HAVE to have brown eyes... it's a breed standard.

Well, he can be a Malamute. It would be extremely rare gene mutation then.

Nothingg says malamutes can't have blue eye's, i mean look at chow chow's, they have purple tongues,no other dog's have purple tongues deosn't mean chows can't, same whith steele.

CLEARLY none of you have owned a malamute. With the except of the people telling true facts.
I have a PUBLIHED book on malamutes it specifically says
1) malamutes never have blue eyes if so the heritage has been tampered with
2) they are used as muscle on sleds, while huskies are speed.

Malamutes NEVER have blue eyes. Their eyes are ALWAYS brown/amber. Any Malamute with blue eyes has a mix in their heritage, which is why they are disqualified from the AKC breed standard of Malamute. The ears in that photo are a dead giveaway that it is not Mal as well. They are pointy, forward facing. Additionally, size is a range and there are dogs who are much larger or much smaller than their breed, just like with humans. Anyone who is trying to prove that a dog could be a Mal by taking a random picture of the internet that whoever posted *thinks* is a Mal (just as speculative as this thread, unless that photo is actually from a renowned Mal breeder) and comparing it because it looks similar is wrong. Again, Malamutes cannot ever have brown eyes. Please go to ANY Malamute breeder & simply ask. People who "hear from teachers at animal shelters," etc. on an internet thread are hardly an authority.

You can breed a giant alaskan malamute and a siberian husky and it can produce a normal sized malamute that has blue eyes. A breeder from michigan currently have several blue eyed giant mal/husky that looks like a normal looking mal with blue eyes.

Wow. This is an old post of mine from forever ago. I can't believe people are still commenting on it. Well, I stand by what I said here. As you can see, Malamutes CAN have blue eyes, but I honestly just think it was something that was overlooked by the animators. Steele's physique is far too similar to a Mal's to be called a Husky. When this move first came out, when I was 5, I could immediately tell that he was a different breed from the rest. I thought that it was obvious :! °x° Oh well lol

Hope you guys still like the post.

That is a Husky. O_o I used to think Mals could have blue eyes, too,
but now I know they're all brown eyed.

BTW, Steele is
100% Siberian Husky IMO. Why? Basic research. The build is completely
off, the eyes, and here's one that nobody's mentioned: his tail.
Malamutes have permanently curled tails. Huskies have tails that, for
the majority of the time, hang down.

about the same dog on both movies. Max in eight below was way to young

Max, the character, was a

graywolf19- Huskies only get up to 60 pounds and are pretty small and
lightly built for sled-dogs. 0.o Malamutes are the bigger built and
stronger ones. They get up to 95 pounds. Also, they are the biggest
kind of sled-dog. No offense, but I don't know where you got the idea
they were smaller.

The picture posted at the top by Rylie is NOT a Malamute.
Purebred Malamutes do not ever have blue eyes. Also, the
ears are completely wrong - they are too small, too pointy,
and way too high on the head. The legs are much too short
and fine-boned. And it has the narrow pointy muzzle of a
husky. The dog is a Siberian Husky or a Siberian Husky

Yeah, Rylie, that picture is a Husky and the only blue-eyed
Malamute is a non-purebred Malamute (it has Husky in it
somewhere.) And graywolf, Malamutes are bigger.

That picture that you got, did you get that on Google images
search? because if you did that is a husky. Because if you
found that on Google, people send those pictures in like we
do with Fan Art or Fan Images. The people that sent that in
Google must have thought that that is was a Mal, but it
certainly is NOT a Mal.

1) A Mal's point above
their eyes is facing towards the eyes and a husky's is
facing away from the eyes like your picture.

It is very common for a husky to have deep blue eyes like

3) If Steele was a half breed, he
wouldn't be making fun of 'Balto The Half Breed'.

I have had me say. Sorry if I was late fot sending this
comment in.

From Odas.

Most northern breeds can have brown, or blue or green or
almost white eyes. Or they can have, for example, one brown
eye and the other could be green. But Malamute eyes are
usually blue or whitish. Good article.

It wouldn't be a fault for Steele to have blue eyes. My
aunty's dog, Nishka, had one blue eye and one brown and she
was a Siberian Husky.

Size for a Husky doesnt mean anything. Steele might still be
a husky, huskies and grow pretty big. But I still think
Steele is a Canadian Eskimo Dog.
